Ideas for simplifying recorder workflow / interface
A topic during today's call was how we (Panopto) can further simplify the recording interface for instructors. Ideas included saving settings (profiles) and being able to create default profiles (we like both of these ideas). What else??

Inappropriate?I would like to see a login page. As it stands, once you enter the server name and your credientials under the "settings" tab, you cannot remove these at the end of the session. The next person who starts the recorder is logged in with your username and password. If there was a way to remove these, then the next person who started the recorder would be prompted to enter their own username and password.
As far as the custom settings, perhaps this could be incorporated into the new scheduler feature. An administrator would setup the parameters of the meeting and just leave the date/time field blank. Then, when the instructor brings up the lecture, all they'd need to do is press the "Start Recording" button.
Also, (I'm thinking as I type). it might be nice to add a "maximun length of lecture" option, just in case an instructor forgets to press the "stop recording" button at the end of the class.

Inappropriate?David,
Thanks for posting! We actually just had this discussion internally as another customer asked for the same feature. I'll ask you the same thing that I asked them, we're a bit worried that forcing users to log in every time may lead to a bad user experience. What do you think?
That being said, we understand the problem of a shared presenter computer and multiple instructors using the recorder application.
I'll defer to one of our developers for your comments on scheduling. -
Inappropriate?I don't think you would necessarily want to force people to logoff, but it would be nice to have that option. If people wanted to keep logged in all the time, they would never have to visit the "settings" tab.

Inappropriate?Hi David,
I think what we're looking at is another check-box on the settings page for "remember login info". If you close the recorder and reopen with it unchecked, it will forget the login info but remember the server. Does this sound like it might work?

Inappropriate?I know these clients are running as services not applications, but Windows Messenger, Skype, AIM, etc. are good examples for a look-and-feel which we have become familiar with. Compact screen layout containing only the most needed user controls. Configuration is only accessed via menu or tray icon, and the tray icon displays the current status. Winamp and Polycom PVX are good examples of how a big fat application can be folded up.
Just my opinion. Thanks.

I’m thankful.
