USB camcorders with live outputs?
Looking for recommendations for camcorders with *live* USB outputs - most of our PC's don't have firewire inputs and we're looking for an inexpensive means of getting a primary camera feed in any of our recording PC's without using analog USB interfaces (most of which don't work properly anyway). To date all the USB based camcorders we've tried only show up as 'drives'.

Inappropriate?Hi Sascha,
I don't remember specific models, but I recall seeing a few cameras that advertise the ability to use operate as video sources by installing manufacturer-supplied drivers. Another option is to use a USB2.0 capture device that converts an analog S-Video signal to a live capture source. If you are stuck, please let me know and I can poke around some more.
Thanks,

Inappropriate?Hi Eric,
I suspect the cameras you are referring to are probably discontinued, Sony had what they called USB Streaming, but it doesn't seem to appear on any of their current models, but if you know different let me know.
With respect to the USB capture device, we went there, tried that but pretty much without exception they have issues, i.e. they are based on TV tuner cards - they require specific drivers, are a pig to configure (as they have no easily accessible control panel, you either have to use the bundled editing software or build one), they generally aren't WME compatible and don't install an audio driver. If combined with an alternative audio source the resultant AV is very out of sync. Do some googling and you'll see that others have problems trying to use them as *any* kind of streaming device.
If the recorder could support the audio interfaces these devices use and provide the means to configure the device somehow then yes, we could possibly use them. Neither Viewcast or Winnov do USB devices, which is a shame.

Inappropriate?Hi Sacha,
I've used Panasonic cameras to stream via USB 2.0, but you do need to install the Panasonic drivers.
But if you already have cameras with firewire (1394/iLink) I'd suggest adding a cheap firewire card to your PC's
In our installations we have analogue switched cameras (Svideo) with a either Osprey 240e cards, or Canopus ADVC 55's via Firewire for capture. -
Inappropriate?Hello Mark,
Unfortunately most of the machines in question have pretty much no expansion space to fit firewire cards, hence the reasoning behind the original question - I'm interested in the Panasonics, do you know if there are any current models that support streaming?
Thanks

Inappropriate?Hmm: "*If the digital video camera is in the camera mode, still images/videos cannot be imported. Switch to the play-mode to import still images and videos." - implies that it *might not* capture live, it appears to be NTSC only, and er, they don't actually make them any more:
