High hopes, dashed once again... Damnit miro
This thing just doesn't work. Not since it was Democracy player. Not ever. I really really was hoping this wasn't going to suck again. This is at least as disappointing as freenet. Please just close up shop and come back when you have something that actually works. All this is doing is frustrating people and turning them away from open source in general. This is really really bad software. I'm sorry. I'm a huge open source fan and devout libertarian, but this is just painful.
So. For discussions sake. Will you PLEASE consider advertising that this is alpha? You're harming something I believe you probably love by putting this out into the world as it is.

Inappropriate?The website's nice though....

Inappropriate? To be fair, your bad experience isn't what everyone is experiencing. During my time working on Miro, I've met a of a *lot* of people who would be more angry and disappointed if we stopped.
I'm sorry that you feel the need to lash out like this -- maybe there's a particular problem you're having that can be solved? After all, the Linux version is known to be a bit more tricky to get going than others.
I’m sorry that your experience hasn't been better. Maybe it can be improved?

Inappropriate? The best thing to do would be to go to http://bugzilla.pculture.org and open a bug report - explaining exactly the problem you are having and including log files if available. We will be happy to help you past any issues - and possibly you will be helping othesr who may also be experiencing the same problem.

Inappropriate?Sorry for any perceived anger. I'm frustrated and truthfully, I don't feel like alpha testing this stuff anymore. As for the "best thing to do" for *me*, I would have to disagree. I'm no longer willing to throw myself against this problem.
However; THANK YOU for the reply. I actually have more faith in the community than I do the software right now (so there's hope, and frankly plenty of it).
I still think you should be advertising the linux client as alpha though. I never would've tried installing it had I known it was as immature as it is. Perhaps you're worried that you wouldn't get enough test data to improve your product if you labeled it alpha? I'd hate to think that's why, because that's simply dishonest, and from what I can tell, you are an honest bunch with your hearts in the right place.
I understand how hard software is. I'm an enterprise java developer. Inconsistent standards and wonked implementations are my daily fair. However, when something isn't ready, it isn't ready, and pushing it out alienates more people than it attracts.
I think you guys are walking a fine line with this, and I think I probably just crossed to the other side of it (for now. I will of course be giving the next release a shot... and probably whining about it in the forums). :)
I’m undecided

Inappropriate? Please do not show your frustration. And write what is the real problem ?
I think "open source" is not real pain.

I'm sorry, I'm having trouble parsing your reply. As this is a discussion thread, I figured the real problem was out of scope for the purpose of this particular forum.
And I agree.... Open Source is... erm... not real pain... -
Inappropriate?Andrew, it's a bummer that you can't get Miro working. I can understand your frustration, but please also understand that troubleshooting your situation is the only way we can make things better for potential future users and the community as a whole – that's the purpose of this space.
-
Inappropriate? That's unfortunate. I was under the impression that this was a forum for discussion (as I chose from the nifty drop down). It seems that no one is willing to even confront the idea of labeling the linux version as alpha quality.
-
Inappropriate?Andrew, thanks for the quick reply. I think I was a little unclear before.
Our space on Getsatisfaction.com as a whole is place for the community to engage one another and work out kinks collectively before they make their way into our Bugzilla system where our software developers are. There are a number of advantages to this set-up that I'm sure you can understand as a developer yourself. Bugzilla is a nifty system, but it's designed for a much different purpose and type of user -- just compare the UI here and there and you'll see what I mean.
There's a couple reasons why relabeling as alpha hasn't been the center of discussion, I don't want to give the impression that I or anyone else are intentionally avoiding the subject. For one, I know I can't personally comment on the stability of our Linux distribution as that is not my expertise. Secondly, the people who can comment on this, our software developers, are working within another system as I previously mentioned. Finally, as jokinglyjoker332 pointed out earlier, your experience isn't necessarily representative of all Linux Miro users as a whole, and I think we would much rather help you work through whatever problems you're experiencing to enhance future versions and our documentation support as it would be of greater benefit to the community to do so.
I’m sure we can fix this

Inappropriate?I use Miro about 2 Years on Ubuntu Linux now. And I did not have any big issues so far!
I’m happy
