Miro Crashes upon Exit in Vista and/or XP
Im running miro on Vista 32 with firefox 3. Whenever I attempt to reboot my machine, Miro always hangs with the error message XULRunner has stopped working.
This problem has also happened on my XP box. This is very frustrating, because it hangs a restart until I hit ok.

Inappropriate? We've got a fresh ticket in Bugzilla about this issue, please give it a look if you've got the time and feel free to add any additional info that might be helpful, it's important that our devs are able to contact you directly in the case of testing fixes. Thanks!
-
Inappropriate? This issue seems to be solved in Version 2.0.1 (r9185). I uninstalled the old version before installing the new.
-
Inappropriate?Problem still manifests for me in 2.0.4. Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Miro.
2. Exit Miro.
Miro.exe crashes.
I'm running Vista 32 SP1, nothing funky installed. -
Inappropriate?Miro 2.0.5 (Win 7 RC 64-bit and Vista, SP1 64-bit)
Every time I close (exit) Miro, I get the following:

Inappropriate?I'm pretty sure that this is fixed by miro 2.5 which is close to release. If anyone wants to try the nightly from 2009-07-21 on http://pculture.org/nightlies - it would be great if you could confirm.
-
Inappropriate?Do I need to uninstall 2.0 before installing the 2.5 nightly? Will the nightly automatically update to 2.5 final?
-
Inappropriate? You don't have to uninstall. It won't be the 2.5 final - but when 2.5 final is released you will get the automatic notification.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks, JED. Appreciate the help. Will download and install over 2.0 and report back...
-
Inappropriate?Still getting the "Miro.exe has stopped working" notification whenever I "quit" Miro. On my Windows 7 RC and my wife's Vista, SP1 installs. Two different computers.
-
Inappropriate?May have been because I installed 2.5 RC2 over my 2.0 install. Uninstalled completely, deleted all folders related to the install. Re-installed 2.5 RC2 and the issue is gone.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for letting me know that. Did you keep your database? I have a suspicion that it's related to the vlc prefs file that's in the Appdata/Partici.../Miro... directory.
If anyone else happens to narrow this down it would be great to know, otherwise I'll look into it some more. -
Inappropriate? No. I didn't keep anything. In my case, it was Appdata\Raoming\Partici.../Miro
All was manually deleted after I uninstalled. So I, in effect, installed 2.5 completely clean. -
Inappropriate?I've just installed the recent 2.5 (fixed version), having uninstalled the version prior. The database conversion was successful, and everything otherwise appears to be working. But the program is still crashing each time I close it.
I'm running Windows XP Home (SP3) on a quad core AMD Phenom.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Same here.
-
Inappropriate?I've upgraded to the latest build 2.5.1. Now Miro crashes on exit every time I close it. Previously it was most, but not all the time.
Also, the 'Downloader' component is crashing more often than it used to. In this case it happens when the program first loads. You get an error dialog and the program continues running fine, except that nothing will download.
The exit crash error happens whether or not the Downloader crashes on startup. -
Inappropriate?Still happening here all the time with 2.5.1 as well.
-
Inappropriate?Any word on this bug. It's getting quite annoying.
It continues to happen on 2 different computers (Vista SP1, 32 bit and Windows 7 RC, 64 bit). -
Inappropriate?Would you please try for me,
1. Shutdown miro
2. Go to this directory: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\
3. Rename the directory PCF-VLC to something else.
4. Restart Miro.
It won't affect anything but I think it should solve this. Let me know what happens please.</username> -
Inappropriate?OK. Seems to be have corrected this. So far.
Two questions though...
1) If that folder is not necessary, why is it there.?
2) Can I delete the folder entirely? -
Inappropriate? That folder gets created when you play files. So yes you can delete it it will get created when needed by vlc.
-
Inappropriate?Thanks, Jed.
-
Inappropriate?Damn. Nice try, Jed. But it started again. Still crashing.
-
Inappropriate? On my Windows XP machine the folder is located at
C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data
I closed Miro, deleted the folder, opened Miro, watched a video and closed it again. The program is still crashing on exit. Same thing after a reboot.
If there's anything I can do to help track this down please let me know. -
Inappropriate?I hope this gets fixed. I suppose a 2.5.2 fix is out of the question, but that may mean a 2.5.3
-
Inappropriate?I'm sort of at a loss at this point. It used to happen to me regularly on my windows box, however during the course of testing it stopped and it correlated to the update to vlc 1.0.
At the same time, I use my machines for testing and regularly install, uninstall, update... So it's possible that there is something externally related. -
Inappropriate?Alright. Thanks for looking into it anyway. Just in case; here's a short list of some of the other programs I run (Windows XP Home + SP3):
Firefox 3.5.1
Thunderbird 2.0
------------------------------------------------
Taskbar Apps:
Avast! Antivirus 4.8 Home Edition
Online Armor 2.1
DateInTray
Volumouse 1.57 (by Nirsoft)
Mozy Online backup service
Yahoo Widgets
WordWeb dictionary 5.51
Palm HotSync
SnoopFree Privacy Shield 1.0.7
Running on an AMD Quad Core Phenom processor -
Inappropriate?I know that the 2.5.2 update was not released because of the crashing issue, But I thought I'd post anyway that it has not helped as the crashing upon exit issue. It is a continuing issue.
-
Inappropriate?Same issue here (for quite a while actually), so going through this post thread, I did a little experiment, hope it helps.
Start Miro ~ it downloads a movie ~ I watch ~ Quit Miro ~Crash
Start Miro ~ Stop Miro ~ ok
Remove PCF-VLC ~Start Miro ~ watch a movie file ~ Quit Miro ~ ok
Start Miro ~ Make it download a file ~ Quit Miro without watching ~ Crash
Start Miro ~ Stop Miro ~ ok
This seems to point to a problem not in VLC but in the downloader.
Hope this helps -
Inappropriate? This happens to me when I don't do anything. In other words. I open Miro, browse for a bit and close it > crash.
It just happens all the time. I've done a completely clean install on 2 different computers (Windows 7 RC 64-bit and Windows Vista 32-Bit). Crashes occur on a regular basis on each closure of Miro.
This is a NASTY bug. -
Inappropriate?Iv'e had the same problem,I don't know if this will help but all I did was right click on miro icon in tray and hit quit.No more problem! Hope this helps!
-
Inappropriate?I will keep investigating my line of thought further (not saying it is the RIGHT one!), but FYI, started Miro this morning, and it downloaded two files. I did NOT play them. Quit Miro, crash. Restarted, and let it sit for a few minutes, quit it, no crash.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for everyone trying to help figure this one out. I agree that it is a nasty bug, and we do need to figure it out.
-
Inappropriate? My theory is NOT right. The crashes occur after no downloading at all. It does seem though it doesn't happen after a quick start stop. The whole issue requires a minute or two running. Well, it seems that way. Sorry.
-
Inappropriate?Same here. Seems to be no rhyme pr reason. In my case. It happens on each exit of Miro on 2 completely different computers. Tried several different scenarios, all of which Miro crashed on exit.
-
Inappropriate?been having the same problem with just about every version of miro on vista 64bit. i can say that when 2.5 was in nightlies before launch, some of those nightly builds didn't crash on exit. however after the 2.5, 2.5.1 and 2.5.2 it's been happening again!
-
Inappropriate?Any word on this issue yet?
-
Inappropriate?same problem on Windows 7 Pro 64bit (RTM).
and was the same issue on both 32bit and 64bit Windows Vista Ultimate
i hope this gets a fix, this is still the best video podcasting tool I've come across. -
Inappropriate?Yep, I've been having this problem on every version of Miro and on multiple computers running XP & Vista.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?I'd love to see an update regarding this issue. A VERY nasty bug.
-
Inappropriate?I'm afraid we don't have any new info on this bug. I used to experience it sometimes, and now it never happens to me. It must be related to an external program or something.
-
Inappropriate?Happening to far to many people. Seems if it is an external program, it would be so common that something could be done. And besides, I just reformatted and re-installed Vista, SP1 (64-bit). Other than Firefox, Miro is all I installed. Still happening. So I can't see it being an "external program" issue. Unless Miro and Firefox don't get along.
-
Inappropriate?@spellbinder, couldn't agree with you more. as i mentioned in a previous comment I've had Miro on Vista 32bit, Vista 64bit, and Win 7 64bit and same issue everywhere! They all were clean OS installs. All probably share a few basic programs such as Firefox, Thunderbird, but that's about it. And even if it was one of those basic programs, it should be fixed.
-
"And even if it was one of those basic programs, it should be fixed."
Couldn't have said it better myself. 2 Clean Windows installs here, each with only Firefox added. One Win 7 64-bit and one Vista 64-bit (as well as my wife's XP, SP3 32 bit). All suffering the same issue. Something has GOT to be done to fix this REAL issue. -
Inappropriate?Just a note, nary a problem here opening and closing Miro w or w/o dLing or playing a file (xp sp2+ a few updates).
I do notice though, when closing Miro (and does seem to relate to downloads and/or views, i think..) alot of database activity.
Just a shot in the dark, but do you guys (that are crashing) have write cacheing on or off (in device manager/disk drives in XP.. couldn't tell ya where in Vista/7 ) -
Mine (all three installs of XP,Vista and 7), are default installs. How ever write cacheing is configured on a default install, that's how it is. -
Inappropriate?I, too, am still experiencing this problem, but the circumstances have changed somewhat in my case. It used to happen no matter what I did, but now if I just open and then immediately close Miro, it does not happen. If I open Miro, play a file, and then close, still no error. But if I open Miro and download one or more files, I then get the crash message when I close Miro.
I offer this for what it is worth (if anything) -- is it possible that downloading files is involved? Or could it be related to the number of downloads you have done/size of the database (I have a lot)? Or do some of you people saying you still have the problem have only a few files downloaded? I'm grasping at straws here, I know, but I'm trying to help track down an elusive bug.
I’m bemused
-
Inappropriate?okay i got some good news. I've just upgraded to the latest nightly build from http://participatoryculture.org/night...
the version for 9.15.09 seems to no longer crash! the exact version number is 2.5-git (6d5ab5b6)
the nightly build from just a few days before that had the same crashing issue. so something that was done to the miro_downloader has caused it to now function.
can a couple of you also try that build for the 15th and see if it works for you too? -
Inappropriate?Mine still got the same problem aftr upgrading to the nightly build. Dang. Oh well ;)
-
Inappropriate?I hope someone does figure this out. Twice I have deleted miro entirely and tried to reinstall it, but it crashes now just upon the automatic launch after installation. I can't open it at all.
I’m frustrated
-
same here: reinstalled but still crashes. also, the guide hasn't been working for months (i.e. last 2 or 3 versions). -
Inappropriate?Whenever i close Miro in XP, it's pops an error, click ok and then it's back to desktop. It's just annoying, that's all... other than that, it's ok. Btw, the miroguide doesn't seem to be working right now....
I’m ok
-
Inappropriate? This is really annoying. I've now had the "crashing upon exit" issue on three different computers (XP, SP3 64 bit / Vista, SP2 64 bit / Windows 7 64 bit). of my 4 friends using Miro, all are suffering from this issue. Two on XP, SP2 32 bit and the others on Vista SP2 32 bit.
It NEEDS to be fixed. It's not just some random thing affection a few. It's a nasty, widespread bug.
1 person says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?Just downloaded and installed Miro 2.5.3 [775f9134]. This problem persists. This has gotten ridiculous. I's not like only a couple people suffer from this insidious bug. Something needs to be done. It needs to be fixed.
I’m FRUSTRATED!
-
Inappropriate?@spellbinder
I tried everything possible. If it's an issue with a fresh install of an OS with just Miro and programs like Firefox running, there's a major problem. I just ended up dumping Miro a few days ago. I may check back in a few months to see if the developers have had an opportunity to figure out what's going on.
I understand, developing is hard. I would contribute if I had time. Miro has come a long way from it's first iteration and is still one of the best programs I've used. But it's also a huge memory hog and slow. If that changes, I would take another look at Miro.
For now I just bought a TV Tuner, so I record all the news shows in HD instead of downloading them. I record the TV Shows on the tuner as well and if I don't get that channel, Hulu Desktop is amazing! I've got the rest of those video feeds in my Google Reader and Thunderbird, so I just click the link and visit the web page to watch them.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I'm with you, sahaskatta. I think I'll be leaving Miro for a bit as well. Maybe check back in a couple more version releases to see if things have improved on the memory front as well as this "crashing on exit" issue.
You are right, of course, on the direction Miro has taken. It is indeed a long way from it's first incarnation. A fine program. But these 2 issues are a show stopper for the time being.
I’m still frustrated
-
I've already stopped recommending Miro to new users because of the crash-on-exit problem. I cannot in good faith recommend and unstable program to associates. I have a reputation to protect.
I will continue to use Miro and test new versions for a while, but, if another program is released which includes most of Miro's functionality in a stable package, I'll move on. 1+ years to fix a major bug is unacceptable.
Developers, it's time to get this fixed or find someone who can. -

Inappropriate? This bug (as posted by Chris Markman in the first post) is marked as "Resolved/Fixed".
Huh???
We've been talking about this for a yea or more now. It is NOT fixed.
I’m angry
-
Inappropriate?I've had this problem in Win XP, Win7 and now in Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS.
This is a problem on all platforms.
Someone noted that maybe the way thumbnails are rendered could be a cause of the problem. I noticed in my Win XP and Win 7 installs that if I changed the way *.bmp, *.flv and *.mp4 were viewed from plain icons to view as bitmaps then the problems occurred. In Ubuntu, nothing was changed from the standard setup when crashing occured at shutdown.
I just don't see how the developers can say this bug is fixed.
Bogus! -
Inappropriate? We know the bug is not fixed. There is an open bug here: http://bugzilla.pculture.org/show_bug... and it's a good place to post any helpful comments.
I'm about to do a fresh os install on one of my computers (which doesn't have this problem), I'll see if it errors and then start working backwards to see if I can find where it started.
I'll post any new info in the above referenced bug. -
Inappropriate? Also having the problem - seems to be connected to jumping around in the video - then Miro crashes on exit with something like memory cannot be read. Reset didn't even work for me on a RAID 0 setup. My RAID was not detected any more. Had to turn the computer complete off to get back in. Not good. Don't want to rebuild my XP machine because of Miro. This bug was NEVER fixed - I had from version 1.0 on. So maybe somebody should think of something OLD.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? For your information EVERYBODY I know has this problem. And don't make it hard for people to post comments here - you might get better answers! What the point of generating a stupid account to post? Don't you want EVERYBODY to provide input? And why do you allow for people to write a posting and then AFTER they write their heart out, ask for a user name and password. How stupid is this? Use common sense and you might even find the bug in your software! Miro is a great software, but you have to fix this bug or YOU NEVER GET ANYWHERE!!!
I’m frustrated
