Suggestions for using computer+miro as household tv
Hi - I'd like to suggest some changes or be directed to where to do so: I use Miro as a tv player having discarded the household TV 1 year ago. The problem with this is that in my house we tend sit the laptop or screen somewhere high up and stable and sit on a sofa with a drink or some food, and then click on "new" to watch a selection of all downloads for as long as we want. If I don't like it we click "next".
The problem is all the keyboard combinations need 2 keys to work (ctrl-space etc) - why can't I just use the arrow keys or something equally simple, so it's ultra easy to change the channel or video? (Yes I know I can configure key combinations, but I'm talking about getting Miro accepted as a TV replacement - and key combinations could be grouped for "PC" and "TV functionality so you could quickly switch to easier ones). Then if I want to find out info or check out/subscribe other feeds *while* a video is playing I can't because it stops that video and uses the main window to show all the info (live comments from other viewers would be brilliant here too): clicking on the menu loses the current video and I have to go to "new" and start all over again. So the side menu needs to function separately, and appear as a pop up or something.
While playing this stream I don't need the list of RSS feeds on the menu below "using miro" - they are not downloaded so they're not something I can watch in that session. What I need is a breakdown of what's already on the computer, maybe split by tags or keywords so I can easily watch a certain type of thing - like "cartoons" or "grisly left wing documentaries" - whatever - but without faffing around making a playlist of all the newly downloaded stuff every single time I watch. Maybe stuff I tag in a certain way from a channel can always go in a certain "live channel" for switching to while viewing... Hope that makes sense...
So I hope that helps - when Miro takes over as a TV in a household, it's got a different vibe to it, and I hope other people ditch their TVs and get into Miro! My email is skoria AT gmail and I'm happy to chat more and I program so let me know...

Inappropriate?Hey Ale,
Thanks for the suggestions -- a few of these things should be making their way into Miro 2.0! Another thing we'll need to do is put together a nice mode for navigating the app/guide from 10-15ft away from the screen... but that one might have to wait a while more.

Thanks, cool!
And the test of 2.0's brilliance then will be if I can leave my kids watching miro and it's so easy they can do it themselves...
But how can I see where these suggested features are listed, and maybe help out?
About remotes - if I really want to get lazy I can program my phone with bluetooth remote stuff. Maybe a simple guide for that as a blog post or a download of a wee mobile java or iphone/android app could help with that in the interim.
Being able to do it all with a mouse can be good - lots of people have wireless mice for example... Or there's wii remotes... Bit of an HCI student's dream... Maybe it should be a summer of code!

I'm so glad to see the 10-ft UI is on the horizon. As I've posted on the Miro blog and elsewhere, I run Miro on a mac mini hooked up to my HDTV. I guess I'm waiting for the apple remote to work with Miro, like it does with Boxee. Along the lines of what Ale said above, this would be a huge step toward making Miro the way I watch all my video on the big screen. -
Inappropriate?I agree, anything that could enable to see Miro from Tv using a remote while sitting on the couch would be GREAT.
