Using wrong sound device in Ubuntu
Hi,
I've been using and enjoying Miro for about two months now and think it's a great open source product, but yesterday I ran into a problem I don't seem to be able to sort out.
My mainboards sound card broke down and started to play bursts of static after getting warm so I ran out and bought a separate sound card and installed it.
I use Ubuntu 8.04 (32-bit x86) and after changing default sound device in System->Preferences->Sound all programs I use, including non-gnome games etc plays their sounds fine.
That is, all programs except for Miro who seems to be stuck on playing sounds through the old broken sound card. I've looked through program menus, looked for config-files and scanned through forums for some help but haven't been able to find any.
Does anybody have any idea of what to do or will I simply have to download and hack the source to get it to work? I'm not a GTK or Linux developer so it would be an very ugly hack...

Inappropriate? There aren't any configuration controls in Miro for switching sound devices.
Are you using the GStreamer renderer in Miro? The reason I ask is that we're about to put out a Miro 1.2.5 fix release that switches the video sink for GStreamer to gconfvideosink. Then Miro would be using the same settings which are stored in gconf as Totem and other GNOME/GStreamer movie players. I haven't checked, but off the top of my head, I think it's possible it would fix the problem you're having.
I think we should be doing the release in the next week. -
Thanks for the reply. I've been trying both the Xine and GStreamer renderer and can use both but none of them give any sound.
Yes, it sounds like switching to gconfvideosink would solve the problem (as long as that sink handles the audio stream too). I'll try the new version when it becomes available and will let you know if I still get no sound.
Thanks for you reply and all your hard work, Miro is great! -
Inappropriate?I have Miro 1.2.7 on Ubuntu Hardy. I tried both Xine and Gstreamer. I used gconf-editor to change gstreater's audiosink, musicaudiosink, and chataudiosink all to alsasink device="hw:2,0" so audio will output to my usb soundcard. Totem, Firefox, everything else plays through the usb soundcard, but Miro still plays through the laptop speakers.
The idea was to hook up the laptop to my TV and use the USB soundcard to output to my stereo system (since the audio quality of the laptop's headphone-out is terrible) so I can watch Miro on the big TV! I even use my Wii remote as a mouse!
Miro is otherwise working great; I just need the sound to output to the correct device.
I’m frustrated
