When will VLC (on Ubuntu) be available as a video player option for Miro?
When will VLC be integrated. BTW, I only use Miro 1.0 haven't had the guts to move to 1.2.3 given my experience with getting miro to work on later versions.
Note, it seems a lot of the newer podcasts (Quicktime based) are switching to Quicktime centric formats that are not viewable with gstreamer or xine.. It would be nice to use VLC as it tends to work when those don't.

Inappropriate?Hi Kiernan!
There are no plans to create a VLC renderer for Miro on the Linux platform. We currently support both xine and GStreamer and both have received a lot of attention since 1.0.
We have Ubuntu packages for Gutsy and Hardy and the Ubuntu folks also maintain a set of Ubuntu packages. If you're having problems, let us know what problems you're having, which set of packages you're using and which version of Ubuntu you have and we can work from there.
As an aside, I use Ubuntu Hardy with the GStreamer renderer with an Intel-based video chipset and I don't experience any issues with Miro and Quicktime-based feeds. That statement doesn't contradict yours--it's just another data point.
Hope that helps--

Well it turns out that it had nothing to do with the quicktime format, but CBS's news programs are now only including references to their flash based web page and not the mp4's as they had been.. I hope it is a fluke, but it could be that they are concerned about ratings and feedback, determining what people watch and what they don't.. I was wondering if you've thought about selling metrics to video podcast publishers such as CBS news, this may permit payment for the project that is at no disadvantage to the viewers while keeping publishers satisfied with acceptance and feedback to viewers unmentioned responses to content. -
Inappropriate? The CBS thing sounds really annoying. Do you have an RSS feed url that I could take a look at?
Regarding metrics, I don't recall if there's been a discussion about maintaining viewing statistics. I'm not sure I'd be a fan of that. On the one hand, it would allow publishers better metrics and that's a good thing, but on the other hand, there are some serious privacy issues involved.
Also, I don't know of any open standard for maintaining and exchanging this kind of information. That makes it difficult to implement metrics and data exchange in a meaningful way.
I'm just talking off the top of my head. I haven't heard any plans along those lines, but that doesn't mean no one is thinking about them.

Well it looks like it was a fluke, they fixed the problem after I had sent them a message about it.. It must have been that they had mis-tagged the video data as the url reference, and vice versa. I should have looked at the rss feed to see what they did.. When Katie is gone from my feed, I take notice, because she's my main source of news, at least my favorite source. Well I'm talking off the top of my head about getting metrics, but it's got to matter to them.. I don't know if it is a privacy issue, only if it goes on without your noticing it.. -

Inappropriate?I would vote for a vlc backend just for its superior deinterlacing support for local files. Of course, I would also like to see miro get better at handling local media collections and integrating them with the feed collections. Then it would truly be the only video app I need.

Inappropriate?I would vote for a vlc backend, too. What I want is to be able to change aspect-ration and crop the image while watching. vlc serves this on right-click. Neither xine nor gstreamer give you this ability. If miro would include an option for croping single clips I could be also fine with that.
I’m happy
