Sold an item on eBay, and now I can't withdraw my money from PayPal!

I created a PayPal account a few weeks ago, when I decided to sell an item on eBay.
I created an eBay and PayPal account, sold the item, received the payment, shipped the item to the buyer, who received it. The sale was complete.
Now, after completing the sale I am trying to withdraw the payment I received from my PayPal account, but I am unable to since PayPal (for no apparent good reason) decided to place a limitation on my account. Now they want me to provide all sorts of information to them before I can withdraw my money, including my Social Security #, which I do not like to give out (especially online).
What is going on here? This almost seems like a scam! I decided to sell an item on eBay, and now I can't withdraw my money?
I don't see the need for my account to be limited and I only wish to withdraw the money that is rightfully mine to my bank account -- after that, I could care less if you kept my account limited because I do not plan on using it in the future after this horrible experience!
Please help resolve this situation, because even when I try to email PayPal about this, I just get a cut-and-paste reply saying that I should basically shush up and supply the information requested.
