Can Users See Each Others Emails
I want to use PBwiki for a project. It is very important that several people can edit and create pages. My plan is to set them as Contributors.
However, I do not want the Contributors to be able to see each other's contact information. The contributor should never be able to find the email address of another contributor. Is this possible?

Inappropriate?Hi Kevin,
Your users will be able to see each others' email addresses. The way we built it, anyone who's trusted enough to be a contributor is trusted enough to have their contact information shown to other logged-in users.
I'm interested though -- why would you not want contributors to see others contributors' information? -
Inappropriate?Thank you! This helps me.
You asked - I'm interested though -- why would you not want contributors to see others contributors' information?
I am looking for a business solution for communication of project needs between my sales staff and my development staff. The two are in different locations.... if they can communicate there is a chance they might cut me out of the process and steal my business. Make sense? It has to do with business trade secrets and no compete clauses. -
Inappropriate?Trusting a user to contribute content DOES NOT mean the user is trusted with privacy information.
I have lots of users and a few have questioned their e-mail addresses being available to all wiki participants. Some people have chosen not to collaborate for the single fact that they don't want to give up their anonymity.
I think PBWiki is making a big mistake with publishing e-mail addresses.
Ramit: PBWiki's own Privacy Policy states "We don't share personally identifiable information with others." Why should a wiki be able to say the same for it's contributors?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Ok, this helps me understand a little better. Thanks, sraymond and Kevin.
Kevin: We can't really help with fundamentally human issues like that. Yes, technically we could add options, but you see how quickly the amount of choices and options add up.
In fact, David (PBwiki CEO) and I were chatting about this the other day (another similar case). He was surprised that people didn't want their email addresses to be shown. In his words, "Don't you want to know who made the edit?"
Because this feedback is so uncommon, we're not planning on making any changes for this any time soon. But with both of your comments, it is something we're thinking about.
Thanks again. -
Inappropriate?"Don't you want to know who made the edit?"
Yes. I just don't want everyone else to know who made the edit. It's none of their business. Only their contributions are their business.
I think you guys are confusing "community contributions" with "community ownership". It's MY WIKI. Sure, everyone contributes, but everyone doesn't OWN the wiki, just me. If I pay for it, then I should have control over it. It's what my parents called "a benevolent dictatorship", not a bloody hippy commune. This is a business, not summer camp.
I’m amazed that these concepts are so confusing

Inappropriate?Guy, I wish we could serve every single request, but if this is a critical feature that you need, then PBwiki probably isn't the best choice for you.
-
Inappropriate?Guy make my point - I want to know who made edits, not everyone else.
PBwiki tech support suggested I could use two dummy email address for the two groups I have. This might be a solution. I could use my domain to set up two account and create users base on them. I would give the user the PBwiki account login information but not the email login info. They will be able to see the other persons email address but it will be generic and if they try to contact them it will go back to me.
Anyone see a problem with this idea? -
Inappropriate?Kevin: As long as the users don't need to see any of the change notifications that go to those email addresses, then you can use this solution. This is very similar to their suggested solution for third-graders (can't link to the original suggestion because I can't find it). It involves a modified gmail address format.
As Ramit wisely points out, if privacy is a concern, perhaps PBwiki isn't the best choice. -
Inappropriate?Thanks for listening...
What about those that use PBWiki for children? Should their addresses be shared?
In case I didn't explain well - I'm not suggesting its unimportant to know what user contributing... just that their e-mail address (a privacy concern) should me shared. Almost every forum on the internet tracks "users" but doesn't show e-mail addresses.
Just because the feedback isn't common doesn't mean it's unimportant to many. Maybe many have never thought about the potential consequences.
I also confess to not understanding the need to see e-mail addresses. In a collaborative environment, isn't it best for everyone to see the "communications"? -
Inappropriate?Seeing someones email or not I think depends on your needs for the technology.
When leveraging new technologies you need to expect that the technology may be used for things is "was not designed" to be use for. Is that bad? I once created an intranet environment on a college campus using WebCT. WebCT is virtual class room technology, so is it wrong to use it for effective communication between 140 staff members in a department?
I clearly have a need that I wish to address. I am exploring technologies that might address that need. PBWiki has many features that will help me and that address my requirements for a collaboration system - easy to use, flexibility, ability to be private, etc.
I coordinate the communication between two parties. This is a business application. However, one party is a 50% "partner" the other party is a "freelance" developer.
My role is to work with the partner about their needs and connect them with the developer. I am the middle person. My value to the business model is making the connection (think of a real estate agent). However, if the two parties can communicate directly my role is no longer needed. My partner can cut me out and take all the profit. When money is involved people do funny things :-)
For example - if you skipped the real estate agent and talked directly with the home owner you could buy the house cheaper by cutting out the profit that the agent is making.
So, PBWiki, might not fit my needs or it might. I am just exploring technologies that could make it easiest for the first party to communicate with the second one directly (I don't need to spend my time cutting and pasting information) while still keeping the two a safe distance apart to prevent the elimination of my role.
I hope this explain my intent a little more. Thank you for all the comments... I am not sure what I will use, I am still thinking. -
Inappropriate?I think that 3rd grade teacher Gmail trick IS fairly handy in this case: http://getsatisfaction.com/pbwiki/top...
And I want to thank everyone involve for a pretty stimulating discussion.
