How can I copy a wiki?
Often, they just want to change the name of their wiki.
The more people who like this idea, the more it gets noticed.
-
Inappropriate? There is currently no simple way to do this. It must be done one page at a time.
Pages?
Create a second wiki at http://PBwiki.com
- Wiki-Names are based on availability, and using at least four letters and/or numbers, and cannot contain any spaces or special characters, other than a dash or an underscore.
1. Log into both wikis and have them open in different browser pages or tabs.
2. Edit a page on the first wiki and make a note of the name for the page.
3. Click the Source button on the editor toolbar.
4. Copy everything in the edit window by highlighting it (right click and Select All) and clicking Edit Copy in your browser.
5. Create a new page in your second wiki using the same page name as the first wiki.
6. Click the Source button on the editor toolbar.
7. Paste in the code you copied from the first wiki.
8. Save the new page.
Files?
Download all of the files in the first wiki by going to the Files page. (Files button is at top of wiki)
Upload all of the files to your second wiki.
Transfer premium accounts from one wiki to another?
We can do that. Just contact support by going to the help link at the top of every wiki page.
I’m happy to help.

Inappropriate? This seems a long road to travel just to rename a wiki! A little like being told that in order to get a taxi to the airport you have to walk to the airport.
Doesnt fit with "You can easily copy content from one wiki to another."
Well, you asked me to say how I felt!
One of you folks said further that if I wanted to copy material from a 1.0 to a 2.0 wiki I HAD FIRST TO TURN THE 1.0 WIKI INTO A 2.O WIKI. But the only way I know how to do that is start a 2.0 wiki and copy the 1.0 material in. Catch 22.
Grrr!
I’m irked

Inappropriate?Nope! Copying a wiki is something we don't currently offer; HOWEVER, we will offer the option to TRANSITION your 1.0 wiki to a 2.0 wiki, no copying, pasting, creating a new wiki necessary. I will personally make sure they announce this on the blog and it will also be announced here.
I don't have a specific date for you on when this ability will be available, I mean, the beta just went public 4 hours ago, and we want to make sure we have any and all bugs worked out before you can transfer your wikis to 2.0 wikis.
Think about how much formatting and customizations some wikis have - we need to make sure that it's all going to arrive intact.
Nobody wants a screwed up wiki, even if it is 2.0.
I’m gonna make sure this show gets on the road!

Inappropriate?Thanks Casey,
And I am a formatting sort of guy. Let me know asap. So far, I lost the formatting on one of the pages I copied over and kept it on two. Any thoughts on why it sometimes works and sometimes doesnt?
Can you let us in on why the technology of why RENAME {wikiname] and COPY {wikiname] are not easy to enable?
Nick -
Inappropriate?Oh. And by the way. I apologize for being crabby about a Beta version. Definitely bad form! Talk about looking a gift horse in the teeth.
But the system TOLD me to SHOW EMOTION!

Inappropriate?Technically, they are easy to enable. Whatever their reasons are, they're not technical.
-
Inappropriate?Dr. Fawkes, I presume.
Thanks for your comment. What would be the economic benefits of not enabling these functions? Given all the service I have had from pbwiki, I dont begrudge them anything, but I can't see the benefit?
Nick -
Inappropriate? In the past, their primary publicly-stated excuse for not adding simple, often-requested features was that it would detract from the simplicity of PBwiki's "easy as making a peanut butter sandwich" model. The only economic aspects that I see are (a) possible increased support costs (having to explain how to use these new features) or lost sales (which I only mention for completeness; I can't see someone not renting a wiki because there were too many features). However, since the good old days, when they cancelled their "upcoming features" roadmap, they've never been fond of explaining why they do or don't do things (since explaining means you're held to your word, while saying nothing rarely causes lost sales). It's pointless to speculate on their reasons, however. I was merely speaking to the technical feasibility (from my own small experience with large computer systems and data structures).
I’m practically oozing kindness

Inappropriate?I'll have someone with more technical know-how jump in on this question since I don't know for sure why renaming and copying wikis isn't something we let you do.
As for why the formatting gets weird, I think it might have something to do with how the different editors implement the attributes you give the text. For example, if you look at the "Source" of a wiki page written in a Point-and-Click editor, it writes in every user-defined attribute the text has- at each line. This isn't bad in and of itself, I can see why making that happen would make it easier to change things between paragraphs.
This is what the first line of one of my pages looks like:
< p >< font face="Times New Roman" >Biology< /font >< /p >
But if you take a look at the same source code written in 2.0, well, this is what it has in front of my first line:
< p style="border-width: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 100%; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5em;" >Biology< /p >
So really I guess it's in how the HTML is written. I would think that 2.0 has "more valid" HTML, but that's up to W3C to decide, isn't it? :) However, trying to paste in 1.0 HTML doesn't always result in it looking the same, because as the user, you haven't defined all the things in your 1.0 wiki page that the 2.0 wiki editor defines for you.
I'm sure you could have told all of this just looking at the code I pasted, I was just thinking it through on my end.
Ooh! And if you want to SEE how badly 2.0 renders 1.0 source code, check out this post I added to yesterday. Screenshots FTW, Copy-Paste FTL.
I’m excited to talk about HTML

Inappropriate?Tee hee, no worries! We've got a lot to do, even with the beta being open now, and there's always room for improvement. Transitioning between 1.0 and 2.0 is going to be a big thing, I think, and I'm sure we'll run into some bugs and weird stuff along the way, even aside from formatting stuff.
I’m emotional too sometimes
-
Inappropriate?Casey,
Thanks again, Casey. That's a LOT more code! I lucky it renders it at all!
I think I will count my blessings.
Was the following a URL? It didnt come through as such. Not sure how to find it, otherwise.
