making sidebar links from tags
Can I make a link in the sidebar that will pull up all the pages that have the same tag in it?
Or a list of all the pages with that tag?
For example, if 1000 people entered their books in my wiki and 100 of them are tagged with the word "picture book" and another 250 of them are tagged with the word "family" I want to have links in the sidebard that will pull up all the pages tagged with "picture book" and another one with all the pages tagged "family".
I may be asking the Wiki to be something it isn't designed to be - like a database - but I'd like to see if I could make it work.
For now I am using 2.0 but I think I will have to ask to be switched to 1.0 because I will need to make this available to a large number of people.

Inappropriate?Susan - have you ever heard of LIbraryThing (www.librarything.com)? You can install their widgets on your wiki (http://www.librarything.com/widget) and search for items by tag. Check it out, and if you have any questions let me know, I use LT a lot.

Hey Rachel, so I started playing around with this but then realized the LT widget needs JS and that doesn't work in 2.0, right? -
Just use the Google Gadget Plugin to embed the code. It's a sneaky little work-around :D -
Hahaha! thanks -
Inappropriate?I do use Library Thing and hadn't realized I could add their widget. Thanks, Rachel. I'll play with that.
I need to make this easy for teachers/librarians coming to the wiki to find what they need. -
Inappropriate?LOL. And I'm a writer *and* a geek!
What I am trying to do with this Wiki is to replace something that broke on my website and I've decided not to fix. I used to have a database for authors to list their books and links to their teaching guides. But I had to enter it all myself and I don't have the time to do that and still write.
So I figured a wiki would work but only if the teachers and librarians can easily find the books that have the topics they want.
Does this seem possible to you? I think I might have to move to 1.0 - can I still use LT widget with the older version?
-
Inappropriate?Hi Susan,
You can use this widget with both versions of PBwiki. I think it would work really well to use LibraryThing as your database- why reinvent the wheel when it already exists? Your users could "add" their information to LT just like they would add a book, tag them, and link to their teaching guides in the "comments" section.
Then the teachers and librarians can use the PBwiki interface to search for books by title, author, or tag, all using the LT widget.

Inappropriate?Hmmm...I agree it isn't good to reinvent the wheel but now this is a totally different direction. Must go put my thinking cap on.
-
Inappropriate? You can also use the URL for each of the tags as a link. For example:
If I have a tag "frogs" and click on it, it goes to the page that has all of my pages tagged with "frogs." This is what my froggy URL looks like:
http://casey1ohtest.pbwiki.com/tags.p...
I grabbed this on my 1.0 wiki, but the URL is the same for 2.0 wikis as well.
I’m a fan of frogs.
