Students Invitation to write w/o E-mail addresses
For an educator wiki, is there a way to invite students to read and write without an e-mail address? (I teach fourth grade. Most do not have e-mail addresses.)

Inappropriate?Short answer:
You can't invite students to a 2.0 wiki unless they have email addresses.
Long answer:
We are working on a better solution. In the mean time, we have had some good suggestions for work-arounds. See this page:

I’m hoping this helps

Inappropriate? The workaround we usually suggest is to use a gmail account, which allows you to create separate accounts for:
youremail+studentname@gmail.com
So, if you have mymail@gmail.com and your student is named bobby, you could create an account for the email address mymail+bobby@gmail.com . -

PBWiki's sense of the K-12 environment seems unrealistic. I often work with schools where students are not ALLOWED to have email addresses associated with the school and are certainly not allowed to check their email from school -- content filters required by U.S. federal law block access to well-known webmail sites.
Teachers have been put on administrative probation for incorporating email into their work with students.
While I deplore such luddite attitudes, it's currently a reality of many school environments where PBWiki might otherwise be useful.
I’m sad

I think you raise a lot of interesting points and they are things that we will need to consider moving forward with PBwiki 2.0. I think at first we were a bit too optimistic about what accounts meant for PBwiki security and the neat features they allowed, and we did not totally realize the impact this would have on the education sector. Still, I think we have quickly turned around, very much due to teacher feedback, and are making strides to make sure the product is relevant for K-12. Thanks for the great feedback! -
Inappropriate?Hi Wil,
We realize that many K-12 students do not have email addresses. We are working on a system that will work much, much better for PBwiki 2.0. 2.0 is still a new product, and we're working to make sure we have the absolute best solution for this area.
So I can promise that it's forthcoming. In the meantime, we recommend that you stick with PBwiki 1.0, which we continue to support.
