AUP What do you think?
PB Wiki Summer Camp: Does anyone or should we expect students to sign an AUP Acceptable Use Policy when they sign in? I do like the simple rules on some of the pages I've seen so far, but I'm wondering about a more detailed one also. Any thoughts?

Inappropriate?Hi Sheri,
As a Support person, I've encountered some pretty crazy AUPs! It might be a little much for students in some age ranges to understand, and falls into the category of Terms of Service agreements, that most people don't read anyway :)
Perhaps a better way of getting to a positive end result would be to have a "Wiki Etiquette" page that all your students have to read, and sign that they agree to it in the comments, but can also ask you questions about it.
Maybe they can all help you write it at the beginning of each school year, so everyone's really on the same page!
I remember seeing a good example on Kristines' wiki - http://kristineedudemo.pbwiki.com/wik... - but this is geared more toward the Summer Camp wiki itself.
This one, on educators.pbwiki.com, has been used by several teachers, and may be closer to something your students would be able to follow: http://educators.pbwiki.com/Wiki+Etiq...
I'd love to hear thoughts from other educators on this topic as well!
I’m excited that people are talking about this topic!

Hi Casey, I did find the student etiquette page and did adapt that. I agree that the AUP can be too much. I'm thinking for my students that I will do as you suggest, use the etiquette page as a first start for signatures and discussion, and build our own AUP with the students. Then I could show them the TOS/AUP which they will probably see has all their ideas in it. The older students can see the value in "reading a contract" -- as well as writing one! Thanks for your suggestion and clarification for me. I hope this discussion helps others as well. Sheri -
Sheri, I obsessively read every paper contract I come across. These documents are nearly always written in very dry and impersonal language, the sole purpose being to mitigate legal liability.
I really like you idea of having the TOS/AUP be a "first start"!
You might even want to try using your TOS/AUP as an introduction to the wiki concept of "everybody can edit". Discuss the provisions of the document, if something isn't clear, have the students rewrite that section!
