Customizing the SideBar so it spans the entire height of the page
While we are really happy about pbwiki there is one thing in particular that is causing us major problems and that is the SideBar!
In our wiki we have a lot of tables, list of documents, data, etc. and depending on the screen resolution this is either displayed in the top of the page or it gets pushed down below the sidebar. In really grim situations on some of our computers the screen resolution makes the sidebar so long that the content of the page (table) get pushed out of the view, which confuses some people so they think the page is empty. Also even if you set the width of the table in percent it seams to be of the text area and it does not account for the sidebar.
A really nice and potentially beautiful solution would be if the web page could have two columns one for the main text area (on the left) and the sidebar spanning the full height of a text area on the right. For an example (if this description is not clear enough) please see my public webpage:
www.hst.aau.dk/~krist
My subjective oppinion/guess is that this would also make the pages look much nicer and more uniform across different computers. Is this possible in pbwiki? Help will be really appreciated, thanks in advance.

P. S. It would be nice if it can be done without css but if not so be it! I guess we'll have to learn it sooner or later.

Inappropriate?Hi,
PBwiki 2.0's basic format is just as you said: the SideBar column is separate from the main content, and the entire column can in fact be hidden if you want to view something spanning the whole screen.
Since the public beta has just been announced, I totally suggest trying it out and seeing how you like it!
If you want to do the same thing in PBwiki 1.0, then it requires CSS and is a whole lot more complicated. I've done it once for my own wikis, but the bugs were never quite ironed out. If you really want to, I can try to lead you in the right direction concerning that.

Inappropriate? Thanks for your help. My lab is still getting used to using a wiki and it is therefore very important that it is a stable version we are using without bugs, as otherwise they may cause my users to choose not to use the wiki. Is it possible to create a free wiki and have it in version 2.0 so I can try it out personally without affecting my users? Last time I created a wiki I did not see a choice between version 1 and 2 in the creation process.
I'm considering to remove the SideBar all together and then use the Main Page as a kind of navigational Sideber, so from a page the user will click on the Home tab then choose what task to do. It adds a time lag (the loading of the main page) but I think for now it could be acceptable.
best regards,
Kristian
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Kristian you should be able to get a free 2.0 wiki if you follow this link:
http://pbwiki.com/content/pbwiki-beta
Like Vu said you will definitely need to know CSS.
Vu, how did you get your sidebar to go down the page all the way. everytime I tried to do this my sidebar went down the entire page length but it made the page like 20x longer that what it needed to be.
Hope this helps
I’m trying to pitch in

Inappropriate?I am not sure if you would be interested but I have code that will make your sidebar horizontal across the top of your wiki below the header?
-
Inappropriate? That would actually be very nice, as the screen's we have at the hospital are rather small so it would be a better use of the screen area. Thanks, in advance.
best regards,
Kristian

Inappropriate?okay just need to know a few things. Did you sign up for an educational wiki, or personal wiki? Would you like to remove the little "share this" box under the side bar? Let me know this stuff and I will write up some instructions post them on my wiki and throw you a link here.
I’m happy to be helping
-
Inappropriate? It's an educational wiki, and it would be great if the share this box can be removed, as the wiki has to be 100% closed to outsiders. The users should know this but better not tempt them :o)
I've read a bit about css but never actually used it.
Thanks for your help, I hope I'll be able to return the favor some time in the future.
I’m grateful for the help

Inappropriate? If you look in your Settings, under "Sharing," you can disable the share box.
As for making the SideBar fill the entire screen, that's a possible solution that I have used with some customers in the past, and it's less likely to break than the other CSS discussed (making the SideBar span the entire screen)
