How to upload to pbwiki by ftp
Is it possible to use an FTP client to upload files to pbwiki "files" folder? If not, this feature needs to be added

Inappropriate?Hi RHJ,
I'm sorry, we don't allow FTP uploads.
We have considered FTP uploading but I cannot promise we will add it anytime soon.
Thanks for asking.
-
Why not? It isn't difficult to set up an FTP server at your end.
The present upload system provided is unbelievably tedious for uploading more than a few files. Now that 2Gb of file space is provided, a better multi-file upload system is essential. FTP is the easiest and most convenient way to achieve this.
Or is the 2Gb files space provided mainly an advertising gimic rather than something you intended people to use? :-) -
Inappropriate?if pbwiki were just a free 2gb ftp account, I'd imagine that it'd attract a whole lot of people that don't have any interest in running a wiki. :)

Inappropriate? Thanks Tim. I'm sure that may be part of the answer. I'm sure it was considered that we don't want to be glorified file host.
I've been told we don't feel that FTP is secure enough. Some have suggested we might try SSH. However, it won't be anytime soon.
Sorry RHJ. This is not what you want to hear.

Inappropriate?Clif:
How about a multi file upload in lieu of any type of transfer. I need to upload about 12 files on any given day, and would love to do this as a single task identifying all the files. I don't need a file host, just image content on my wiki.
Thanks

Inappropriate? You can already upload multiple files at once, however, it does require you to select each one.
I agree that your idea would be great. It's been suggested before and we'll do something about it ... but I can't promise how or when. -
Inappropriate?Multiple file upload doesn't appear to work on mac (FFox, Safari latest versions: no 'add more than one' link appears) and even if it did, it would still be very primitive and very tedious.
Is there a widgetty solution a la box.net, sans Flash?
thanks
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I use a similar solution from:
https://www.getdropbox.com/home
You can download a tool that lets you drag and drop files into the dropbox and even allows for syncing folders.
You can then use a dropbox widget to display the files on your wiki.
http://freewarewiki.com/MyDropBox
I hope this helps for now.

Inappropriate?Thank for the reply Clif! This was not a bad thought, so I gave it a whirl.
But:
dropbox gadget works badly in PB via Safari (cookies play up, Greasemonkey required, bleh)
The other issue is a whole new app requires a whole new set of access controls and invites, passwds etc and a whole different (annoyingly) access granularity.
If it was just me using my wiki it would be fine, but...
This is a long way round to saying that there are solutions,
but P-B sandwich-simple they ain't.
Still Wanted: a page with a pile o' files in a box inline somewhere, and an easy way to throw handfuls of files at it.
If you can see/modify the page, you can see/modify the files. That's the idea...
thanks anyway.

Inappropriate?I've neen asking for a desktop syncing tool for years (seriously). I think it would be an awesome addition to the service. However, the powers that be in pbwiki don't seem to agree with me. There have been some promising posts that they were looking into actively developing etc etc... but this was a long time ago. Its a shame really
-
Inappropriate?I've asked for an update on this. In any case, this thread will be notified if any progress on this feature request is made.
Do you have any suggestions on what type of access you'd like to have ... a web applet here ... an installed application on your computer ... both?
-
Inappropriate?Thanks
Well:
applets suck we can all agree, I think. Even Flash is more fun to use. Just a web interface is what's required, really
1. Medium term: make this someone else's problem. Partner w. someone else. Dropbox (thanks for the tip) is pretty good at what they do, as are box.net. They've both built decent upload/ store/share infrastructure, widgetry, etc although neither is perfect. But they don't really compete or compare with what you guys are doing.
So: You just need s/one to partner with and (important bit) create a permissions and hierarchical structure that reflects the pbwiki one, doesn't require additional logins etc.
Then you can sell their clients what they don't got and you do, and vice versa. No?
2. I'll settle for a plain-Jane multifile uploader in HTML right now, and you can forget all the other applets and bells/whistles. Look:

Glad to have pbwikan staff here!

Inappropriate?Like Hooft above I would suggest a possible partnership with DropBox or Syncplicity. They seem to have file syncing down to a T although their business models and yours may be at odds?? If this is a no-goer then a roll-your-own file syncer with similar functionality would be very welcome. I won't comment on the tech requirment because I'm not qualified. However, delta syncing and a good conflict resolution system would advantageous and essential respectively. Not sure what Hooft is on about with a multi-file uploader as this is in place already.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the great feedback. I'll pass this on.
I agree about Dropbox and Syncplicity, they are very very good at what they do.
