Is a wiki a good way to share company knowledge?
I want to have a place to share & archive the collective knowledge of a real estate firm.

Inappropriate?Laurie, I maintained a wiki at my previous job. I can personally attest that a wiki is a fantastic way to share company knowledge, particularly institutional or obscure knowledge that rarely makes it to paper.
The hard part for me was to get people in my company to actually use the wiki. However once that happened, the wiki became the first place I would go to find answers.
Please let us know how we can help you get a wiki going at your real estate firm!

Inappropriate?A wiki is a great way to share company knowledge for a couple of reasons.
1) Everyone can contribute.
Most official company documents are the work of a few managers or HR people. Wikis let everyone chip in, making the documentation more comprehensive and useful.
2) It's constantly evolving.
Rather than having to wait until the next time you're scheduled to print the company manual, wiki changes are available to everyone immediately.
3) Built-in change management
Have your people set up notifications, and your team will be automatically notified whenever someone makes a change. And if you don't like the change, you can always roll it back.
4) You can link to knowledge outside the company
Link to anything on the Web. When people read about your 401k, they can click to view their balances online.
5) It's searchable.
This may very well be the most important point--putting company knowledge in the wiki makes it searchable. The more you add, the more important this becomes.

Inappropriate? What about information that you don't want everyone to know? Likesay, internal contact information, like telephone extensions, emails, photos of individual people, etc.
Can that be 'blocked' to guests or even 'non-editors'? Or is that only in the upgraded versions? -
Inappropriate?Currently, that's only really available in premium wikis (unless you wanted to make two, one for the whole company, and one for sensitive information) but in PBwiki 2.0, which is being released pretty soon, there will be page-level security for all levels of wikis, even free ones! You can check out our blog post explaining this, and some other cool stuff too, at this link: http://blog.pbwiki.com/2008/01/08/pbw...
