Page/Folder permissions - Public/Private options
Hi,
Me again about the eagerly awaited page permissions. Is there going to be an option make a page or a folder public or private i.e. the default is private but you have the option to 'publish' it so it can be picked up by search engines. Currently this is only available as a wiki-wide option. I suppose if the wiki was 'public' the all you would have to do would assign permissions to each new page which would stop Jo public seeing it. However, I want my wiki to default to private and then have the option to 'publish' it. Is this going to be possible.

Inappropriate? This is something we're going to release with PBwiki 2.0. We're still working on it, and I know we keep saying, "Soon, soon!" but we also want to make sure it's fantastic!
What you may want to do in the meantime if it's a project of great importance is have your main wiki be private, but if you have a page or two you REALLY need people to be able to access, you could create a second, public wiki and post those pages there.
I know it's not the best solution, but it's better than putting all your plans for Total World Domination on hold waiting for 2.0 ;)

Inappropriate? It doesn't seem like this has been implemented.
I would like to make a particular folder have cascading permissions -- that is, make it possible for the world to SEE the content, but choose either a higher up role or set of individual users be able to edit the pages.
Currently you can only make an entire folder visible to a certain group of users -- you have to then set editable permissions on each page within the folder.
Within the Management view, it would solve my problem if I could select all pages in a folder and set their permissions in batch mode -- rather than having to modify each page's security settings individually.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
I've read through your post twice and I'm still not sure what you would like to see. It's been a long day, so I'm probably a little dull-headed at the moment.
Can you dummy down your request for me?
Right now, a page does inherit the security setting of it's parent folder by default. That seems to satisfy at least the last part of what you would like.
Thanks for the post. I appreciate all of your participation here.

Permissions are always a confusing topic.
Here's the scenario: we record minutes for the OpenID Foundation. We would like to make them publicly readable but not publicly writable. Instead, I'd like to make only a subset of users be able to edit the pages in a certain folder, but allow the whole world to be able to view them.
Playing around with the security/permissions settings did not seem to afford me this kind of configuration. -
Inappropriate?Ok, that's a good example.
We do need to work on allowing this in my opinion. I can't promise you'll see it soon though.
The only work-around I've used it to host public pages on an entirely different wiki that is set to public viewing but is limited to only the editors you need. A free public wiki works fine for that.
You can post a link to the public page, or ...
If needed, you can display pages from another wiki in your wiki.

I realize this is very cumbersome, but it does work in such a case as you described.
I'm sorry we don't have a better solution yet.

Yeah, that's not going to cut it. I might be willing to put up with that, but I know folks who use this service won't.
I also just checked -- and apparently my permissions settings didn't work -- everything in the folder is now invisible to the public. Hmm, not good. -
In a private premium wiki, that's what I'd expect. I've asked for some advice on this. I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything obvious. -
It's a premium public wiki: http://wiki.openid.net -
Hi Chris, there is one more feature available that could help in this situation. An administrator can "Lock" a public page so that only they can make changes to it. I believe that this feature is available in some premium wikis. See this page for details: http://pbwikimanual.pbwiki.com/PageSe... -
...which leads us back to the need for batch permission editing! Oh well, I've locked down the pages for now so at least people can see them. Thanks.
