I really like the way LinkedIn is listing people by name. You can scroll through the whole thing or jump directly to names starting with a letter, or you can do a very fast ajaxy search. Check it out.

If I may make a suggestion here, you might want to consider indexing companies by the first letter of the company's name (like in an address book). I don't know if it would make any difference from the search box, but it's certainly a way to divide a huge list into smaller parts.

Great point, Norbiq. We've been hearing this more and more: people want to use GetSatisfaction for discovery and sharing. So over the next few months we'll be rolling out some exciting features that make this easier and more fun.

I'm still not sure if a flat list of thousands of companies is the most useful way of doing this, but we'll tweak it until we get it right. Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback, norbiq. I was just using that page myself to show my mom a sampling of companies that were in GS.

I've just noticed this topic in the "Occasionally related topics" on the sidebar and decided to answer Thor's question (yes, I know this topic is 5months old :]) as to why someone would want to look through 40+ (or rather 60+ now) pages of companies. Well, first of all, when I discovered GetSatisfaction I was curious what other familiar companies (besides the one that brought me here) were on GS. Maybe I could subscribe to their new topic rss feeds and learn something new about them. Second, the list actually let me find companies I never heard of before and thus get to know new products and services. Believe me, it was much easier to sacrifice some time and look through the company list page by page than type all the names of the companies that would come to my mind into the search box. That way I know I didn't miss anything :)

This topic reminded me of the opposite request we received a while back before we paged the Companies Page.

It may be worth it to make an un-linked "all companies" page that just lists each one by name. I like browsing to see what companies have been added.

I'm getting the sense that maybe you want to use the companies list to scrape? In that case, if you can wait around for 6-8 weeks we will have our API available, and you'll be able to get easier access to the data.

Point taken, though I'm curious what you were trying to use the company page for. Were you trying to get a view all the companies in the systerm?

The idea with the companies page is to highlight recent activity. The company search feature is for people looking for specific businesses. It's not really intended to be a master index of all companies (as there will ultimately be many thousands of companies in the system). I've actually been thinking it would be better to have *more* information about the last activity in each company.
