FAQ set one of FAQ's replies as an official response to "How much useable capacity is available in a MatrixStore cluster with 40TB of raw capacity?" in Object Matrix
FAQ, an employee of Object Matrix, replied on November 19, 2007 17:13 to the question "How much useable capacity is available in a MatrixStore cluster with 40TB of raw capacity?" in Object Matrix:
At the moment the MatrixStore software always protects any data written to it in two separate locations within the cluster to ensure the data is available for re-use, forever. So useable capacity is half that of the raw capacity available.
When MatrixStore is run on RAIDed disk then the overhead of RAID5 must also be taken into account:
42TB raw disk capacity (4 Apple Xserve RAID fully stacked = 10.5TB each)
after RAID becomes:
(42TB / 7) * 6 = 36
after dual location protection becomes:
36 / 2 = 18TB
