Aparently, the reason for the shortage is due to the supply of the LED screens which are only found in the 15" models. Apple are offering customers 17" stock as replacements to leaviate the demand on the 15", which is a fair deal. The American market obviously have preference, so we Aussies just have to deal with it. If you need portability i'd recommend a MacBook.

Thanks Thor,
a friend recommended a supplier that is quoting a 2-4 day turnaround rather than 3-4 weeks - just waiting to hear back from them to confirm this prior to placing an order.
Someone else thought that the resellers offering the 17" at the 15" price meant that there might be a model upgrade in the wind - I'm not sure myself, would Apple upgrade something that's only been out a few months? They did drop the price on iPhone after selling nearly a million of them :)
Cheers, Andrew

This sounds like an Australian supply issue. As far as I know we have a plentiful supply here in San Francisco, though I know that demand for MBPs has kicked up by several percentage points lately, and the 15" is the mainstay. So I wouldn't be surprised if the imports were getting squeezed.
Hold tight, though--they're worth the wait!

Facibus reported a problem in Apple on September 15, 2007 07:48:
Why the worldwide shortage of MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz machines? Why is it so hard to get hold of a MacBook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz processor machine? Is the shortage due to unforeseen demand (bad planning dumbness) or deliberate shortage (lack of care on Apple's part)? Apple Australia are quoting 7-10 business days to supply, but local resellers are saying it can take up to a month - and it's been this way since these suckers were released. It's not as if there is a universal shortage of MBPs - there are resellers here in Australia selling the 17" model at the 15" price. This is a great deal but I need portable.
I've been using PCs and Sun hardware since 1992 so this is quite a leap for me - the least Apple could do is meet me halfway.
