Hello Dan,
The offer is still in effect, though I'm not promoting it due to a technical issue that we hope to resolve this week. The issue is that our media management page, the page that displays your ebooks for downloading, can have problems drawing if you have lots of ebooks listed. We're recoding the page now and hope to have the solution in place later this week, or early next, at which point we'll start promoting the offer again. But it works fine in most cases.
For those who are unaware of the offer, here are the details:
Anyone who has registered an O'Reilly print book -- http://register.oreilly.com/ -- can upgrade to the ebook for $4.99.
Once you've registered your books you can click to the book's catalog page and add the ebook to our cart. Use code 499UP in the cart to get the upgrade pricing.
That's it, and thanks for buying O'Reilly books!

allennoren replied on August 13, 2009 05:43 to the problem "amazon hardcopy is cheaper than ebook" in O'Reilly Media:
Hello Brandon,
First of all, thank you for buying our books, whether from Amazon or direct from oreilly.com. Second, sorry for the frustration. Amazon functions at a scale that individual publishers like O'Reilly can't, and they discount each title deeply, sometimes at a loss. While we don't discount individual print book purchases, we do offer a Buy 2, Get 1 Free discount, plus free shipping on orders over $29.95 in the US, that is within shouting distance of Amazon's pricing. This offer also applies to ebook sales, which are already discounted by 20%.
When it comes to our ebooks we offer some things that Amazon doesn't. For example, when you buy an ebook from O'Reilly, you get lifetime access to three, DRM-free file formats for the price of one, with no strings attached. We update those files and alert you when changes and corrections have been made to them. Though developing the processes and systems to support our ebook program required substantial investment, we're continually evaluating the price of our ebooks and discussing whether we can provide better pricing and still make enough money to pay our authors, staff, and vendors, and still make a profit.
This is, as you well know, a time of change and stress to all existing business models, and we're doing everything we can to produce the best books at the best prices.
Thanks for taking the time to write.

Hello Chris,
Do you mean that you'd like to buy the print book from the store in the Netherlands, and buy the electronic version from us at the discounted bundled price? If that's your question, then we're working on a solution for this now. We're calling it our ebook upgrade program, and it will allow customers to buy the print book anywhere and then purchase the electronic version from us at the discounted price of the print+electronic bundle. This should be ready shortly, and I'll respond to this thread when it is.
Thanks for your interest. --Allen

allennoren replied on May 08, 2009 23:54 to the question "3 for 2 offer with PDF & Book bundles costs more then bundles alone??" in O'Reilly Media:
Hello Christr,
As you've noticed we have a number of discounting options available, and you're citing two specifically; our bundle pricing, where you currently receive the print and electroinic book for 1.1 times the list price of the book, and our Buy 2, Get 1 Free offer, where you receive the equivalent of one free book when you purchase at least three (the discount is pro-rated across the items purchased). As you've noticed, if you want to purchase both the print and electronic versions of a book, our bundle pricing winds up being a higher discount. It sounds as though you're asking us to apply the B2G1F discount on top of the bundle discount. Depending on the mix of books ordered, that would be a 60% discount, and we'd lose money.
I hope you understand.

allennoren replied on April 24, 2009 22:38 to the question "Why does adding the digital version add 30% to the cost?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hello Michael,
Our print + ebook bundles should be 120% of the print list price, and we're fixing it in this case. Can you send me an email so I can have our customer service take care of you? allen at oreilly dot com is my address.
As to the value of the electronic version, we don't just digitize the book. We provide you with three DRM-free formats for one price--.pdf, .epub, and Kindle-compatible .mobi from which you can cut-and-paste and print. You also get free updates to those files. The tools to provide that combination, and the systems to service them, required significant time to build, thus our pricing.
Sorry for the frustration, and thanks for writing. I hope you email me.

allennoren replied on April 21, 2009 18:18 to the question "Book on Google" in O'Reilly Media:
Hello Alley,
Our settings in GBS allow for 20% of a book to be viewed, and no more. As you'll see in the attached image, there are pages removed from the preview.
At almost 900 pages, that's a lot of preview pages, so it can seem as though the entire book is available. The setting is the same on amazon.com, as well as most other preview systems. For what it's worth, research shows that the more of a book that is available, the higher the likelihood of someone purchasing.
Thanks for taking the time to write. --Allen

Hello no,
My extreme apologies. I can assure you we do not spam, and that we make every effort to remove people from lists. That you didn't hear from our customer service isn't acceptable and I'd like to get more information about that. Regarding Web Expo, that's a joint event between O'Reilly and CMP, so you could be on one of their lists. Regardless, would you mind emailing me directly at allen at oreilly dot com, or call my direct line at 707.827.7124 so we can remove you from all our lists?

allennoren replied on March 19, 2009 21:45 to the question "HELP can i read them???????" in O'Reilly Media:
Assalamu alaikum, Zakaria. Thank you for asking about the use of our electronic files. They are very likely illegal copies, and are therefore haraam. There are conditions when using our books would not be considered theft. For example, there was a case when the Caliph Umar suspended the enforcement of punishment for theft due to a famine. So in your case, I'd ask if there is a famine of books or alternate means to obtaining the information you are after. If there is, then use of the books could be allowed, so long as the user, if he or she was able, intended to use the knowledge gained to help others, and intended to repay the debt at some future time.
