Jay - perhaps that's a new feature. This conversation was posted 9 months ago. There was no delete account function at that time. – Courtney, on August 28, 2008 14:05

I also agree. If this is not resolved soon, I may have to quit Twitter, even though I love the service. I just cannot keep policing the people who start watching me. This could be an issue for child predators, as not having the easy ability to require whitelisting people in order for them to watch you, a predator only needs find the child's twitter, start following it, and if the child is a typical youth of today, he/she is likely to just say "hey, I have a new follower! They must find my comments interesting." and now you have a situation where every minute posting from that child is available to the one trying to prey on him/her.
I'm not a doomsday type person, and I'm not willing to go overboard on "Think of the children!!!1!ONE!!!1!", but I think this is a serious privacy concern that needs to be addressed.

Perhaps there's a more positive way to express "neurotic"?"Neurotic" seems a little harsh, especially in comparison to the other attributes, which are primarily expressed as positive traits. You could reverse the whole category and call it something like "Ability to handle stress" and have the people who previously scored high on "Neurotic" score low on "Stress Capacity"...

I agree with both of you. I think there needs to be an approval process before someone is listed as your follower. I like to keep my updates public, but I don't want to go into my list of followers and find BestPornSites. It's not okay. I am not receiving emails either when these people are following me so that I can block them right away. This should be a BIG priority for the Twitter heads.

some sort of middle ground between going private and not wanting to be followed by strangers? My twitters are currently public and I'm fine with that (I find the "this user is private" experience a little off-putting, but that's a separate issue) but I'd love to be able to go in and bulk-delete the twitter-collector people from following me rather than having to go in and block them one at a time. Any thoughts on that?

Oh no! Do I really have to clear out every one of my friends *as well* as clearing out the profile info before I can have them remove the whole account from their servers? I can't wait for the slew of mesages from people asking why I don't want to be their friend any longer. I already got a bunch of emails, IMs and SMSs about "Courtney Skott is no longer listed as married to Lane Becker."
Hey Facebook -- you were never a part of my marriage, so stay out!

The most wonderful part about deactivating a Facebook account is the way they nag you to stick around. Whatever reason you give for bailing, they have a response:

I left some comments on Simon's a while back detailing how I feel about the "omnibus" social networks like FB, MySpace, etc. - they're like an especially naggy friend, demanding 100% of your time until you leave in frustration:
