When did you install podworks? I always restart my mac after installing new apps. ONce you've done that connect the iPod touch first and then launch podworks. Make sure podworks is in your apps folder as well. Also quickly check you have the latest edition of podworks and iTunes - there was an update last week (for Mac anyway)

The original question was regarding an iPod Classic and it does have 'disc use', you are correct though, the iPod touch doesn't - being a flash drive.
I'm not sure, but I think the Mac will give you a choice "are you sure you want to sync" - at that point you should be able to convert to manual updating. I recently installed the new Jan software update on my touch and of course, like everyone else it wouldn't install without resetting the ipod. I had to set to sync thereafter to load the new software. However, when I went to plug back in to manually manage, it did offer give me the choice of syncing or no. I have to say I always keep my music well backed up now, it seems just a little too easy to have something go wrong.
Cheers,

Sloane, I'm so pleased that it all worked well, sorry I was out all last night and didn't see the glitch before now. It is always a little iffy working windows/mac, but at least you have all your files. iPodrip is pretty good, but if you ever upgrade to an iPod touch, it won't work. Podworks does.
With Leopard you also get automatic file back up with Time Machine, get yourself a good little portable hard drive (I have a small 80gb Rocstor) and absolutely everything is backed up every day - awesome. Never have to worry about your music and important stuff again.
Enjoy Leopard, your Mac and your music.
Best of luck

I believe that while a Mac may read a formatted Windows iPod, it won't work with it, you will still have to re-format your iPod to the computer you are going to now use. iPod Rip is just an application in order to transfer the music and photos. I ended up with Podworks (I only use a Mac and I have just added an iPod Touch) and I really like the programme and at only $8.00 it's a great deal. They also offer great support (in my experience). I've just upgraded to Leopard and I did something I've never done before and made a full bootable backup on my system prior to installing (just because Leopard is quite different). Having said that, I haven't encountered a single (non user based) problem.
If you are going to predominantly work on a Mac I'd port everything over to that. Copy your images and music to dvd's or cd's or a zip drive and you can share them with anyone that way. I always have backup images, music and files on a small zip drive that way I can just plug it into anyone's computer and transfer over work files or photo albums.
I don't know if that's any help, but I would tend to be cautious, you don't want to lose your music or photos. As an aside, I recently plugged in a friends windows synced iPod to my Mac and while it may read some of the music, it couldn't 'talk' to the iPod I would have had to reset it to do that.
As far as support for iPod Rip if it's only something you want to use to make the initial transfer I don't forsee a problem. It's pretty basic to use.

A friend recently had the same issue and this is what they successfully did. I've never done it as I've always had Macs, but it sounds right.
The first thing you want to do is copy the music off your iPod onto the Mac. To do this I recommend you download, and install, software called iPodRip. It works for both Mac and PC it's freeware which I believe can be used 10 times. (Podworks is actually a better programme and cleaner interface and I recommend that for when you have everything on your new Mac)
Once you download and install iPodRip run it and copy all your music off the iPod and onto the Mac. When you've completed that launch iTunes and then import all the music on the Mac.
Once you've successfully done this then connect your windows-formatted iPod to your Mac. I'll assume you have the iPod CD that came with the iPod? Insert that into the Mac and then install the software from the CD onto the Mac.
Once you've successfully completed that then run the iPod utility and format the iPod to the Mac format.
Once you've completed that - the iPod is reset to its factory settings and ALL files have been erased - disconnect and reconnect the iPod from the Mac. iTunes should now start running and recognize the iPod. Now, import all your music from iTunes to the iPod.
I would also ensure that iTunes is set to manually manage music.
I'd also do a backup of all your music library, I have an extensive music/video/movie library and I always keep a back up on a small portable hard drive - I got hit once during a power failure and lost everything during an upgrade...
Good luck.

I do have Office for Mac, which I clean installed after my upgrade to Leopard and it's the most bloody aggravating programme, it is causing all sorts of trouble with fonts, even in my Adobe Professional and iWeb, it crashes and then tells me I don't have system fonts when clearly I do.
My only work around which seems so far to be working was to trash the prefs file for my font folder, trash the font folder and reinstall. I'm still holding my breath on this one. I understand there will be a new Office for Mac next year.
I do know anytime I've upgraded my OS, I have to re-install Office otherwise it's a real nuisance app.-

As far as I'm aware you cannot transfer music from a windows synced iPod to a Mac, it would probably really screw things up. Have you tried copying your windows library on to an external hard disk and then transferring from that to the Mac? The music code is the same. At some point you will have to decide whether to keep your iPod synced to Windows or Mac though

Try the following url

It's a small ebook (about $10) called Taking Control of Customising Leopard, it might give you a few good hints on getting to know Leopard. I purchased it just to feel my way around the new OS and although I've used Macs for 20 years, I did find it very useful.

When I tried to connect the first time I got an error from podworks, pretty much the same - no iPod recognised. Back in the old days with Mac you used to have to restart after an app download, so I restarted, an iPod touch doesn't show up on the desktop, so I waited till it registered within iTunes itself. Presumably the drop down menu of Podworks has nothing in it? Try a clean download and reinstall podworks into the apps folder, sometimes you have to jog the Macs memory. (presuming of course you are using a Mac)
Is your iPod in disk mode? Podworks won't recognise if it isn't. If it isn't in disk mode open the source list in iTunes window and enable disk use. good luck.

I've just finished updating to Leopard (without any hitches), fully backed up a bootable drive, then started backing up all my music (2500 songs, 100 videos and 15 movies/tv shows) - when the power failed in our entire neighbourhood. I lost everything and was I peeved... I purchased Podworks, plugged it in, held my breath and transferred everything back to my MacBookPro (it took awhile), but everything is there, all music, all videos all television/movies. I've now backed it up, yet again and I've happy:-)
Sorry, I have an iPod Touch, MacBookPro 233mhz. seamlessly running Leopard with a full music library again...-
