I'm doubting this is the problem, but I want to check first anyway: Is it possible that you've changed a setting on your camera that would have lowered the output resolution of the photos? What kind of camera is it? I'm assuming it worked previously and this is a new problem you're having, but if it's a new camera, that could be a key detail. Let me know.
I know that iPhoto and Preview are both very good at displaying even lo-res images on-screen, but that they can look not-so-good when printed.
Also, any chance you can post an image of one of these photos as they appear on screen? Maybe on Flickr?

iphoto turns my pictures into a grainy messthe pictures look great on my camera. they even look great in iphoto. once I open them up as a jpeg outside of iphoto or upload them to flickr or other services they look like garbage. super grainy and discolored. am I doing something wrong or can I fix a setting in iphoto to resolve this?

OK - I've tried all your solutions. It can't find my database even though I replace the new one with the old. So Entourage 2008 is total crap. If you have any other solutions, I'm all ears. Looks like I blew a lot of money on something I can't use. No reason to update Office. I just didn't want to get left behind with 2004 Entourage. Waste.
