If users chose not to receive email notifications they will not be notified of any activity, unless they stil have the "important" option marked (which means they will receive notifications for the creation of items marked as important).

In Goplan 2 (http://goplanapp.com) it is possible to fine tune these settings for each project in the Preferences pane. :)

Items marked as "email as important" will be received by anyone in the project that, in their notifications Preferences, marked the "Important" option for the project.

If you wish to only notify specific people (with that option) and not all, you can simply add "@useralias" to item descriptions/texts. This will notify those people mentioned through the "@useralias", if they have the "Important" option marked.

Don't forget that people with the "Real Time" option will receive notifications for all items.

That is one of the main features of Goplan 2, which will also solve the problem of unique project aliases.

Currently it is not possible to make a "on the fly" Goplan UI theme personalization.

In our (long awaited) big upgrade to Goplan, we will introduce some degrees of theme personalization (some colours, user logos, etc).

Regarding user submitted themes, we won't say no to them, but we cannot promise they will be made available.
