2MNY replied on June 30, 2009 14:40 to the problem "Un-Writable files ... ? Metadata can not be written ..." in Songbird:
I tried saving all my playlists to m3u, uninstalling songbird and deleting the songbird files in C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local and C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming. I then reinstalled the latest songbird nightly and imported some m3u playlists with Media Management turned off. Even after doing this the Metadata Editor still comes up empty on every single track in my library. I backed up my profile so I got my old library back but I still can't change anything with the Metadata Editor :(

I just followed the steps in the bugzilla to add the new about:config preference. Older files in my library were not changed until I forced songbird to re-check their metadata (ran a find album artwork). You could try turning off media management restarting and turning it on again to see if it renames everything with a leading 0.

Been having this problem with the latest nightlys for about a week and a half or so. Using Windows 7 x64. Happens when I tell Songbird to check for album art, or remove a file. It also happened when I changed metadata for a number of files but is no longer relevant as the Metadata Editor is no longer working(see http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...). The error message does not come up when I change metadata from the list view window.
2MNY replied on June 26, 2009 03:43 to the problem "Un-Writable files ... ? Metadata can not be written ..." in Songbird:
Are you sure it is songbird resetting the permissions on these files. If you are using the default music folder for your user account then all the files will be write protected to prevent other user accounts from changing or deleting your files. Windows will automatically reset the permissions on these files if they are changed.
None of this should be a problem though as Songbird runs under your account name and has every permission to change files that you do. If you can move/copy/rename a file or change it's metadata from explorer then Songbird can too.
A comment on the problem "Un-Writable files ... ? Metadata can not be written ..." in Songbird:
This doesn't sound like the problem I'm having. As I stated I can edit the metadata for files inside Songbird from the listview by clicking on a field and changing it. And as I stated, even more particular is the issue that when I open the metadata editor for one or more files all the fields are blank. I could understand this if artist, album, etc. did not match up but for it to be blank on a single file as well? Adding text to one or more fields and clicking ok does nothing and will not close the metadata editor. Any changes attempted to be made in the metadata editor are unsurprisingly not persistent.
I suggest my post be re-opened or moved to a more relevant topic such as:

I'm creating this thread because I am having a number of errors that seem they could all be related.
First and most importantly, the Metadata Editor no longer works, even for mp3s. When I open the Metadata Editor for one or more files all of the metadata fields are blank. I can change the metadata from the main list view window.
Secondly, attempts to change metadata result in a Media Management Error even if the metadata is successfully changed. I know Media Management is working because files are moved to the appropriate folders and renamed to reflect changes to metadata.
Finally songbird organizes my media library every time it starts. I have a large library so it's a bit of a pain in the ass to wait 5 minutes or so to listen to music every time I start up songbird.
Problems began around the 1.2a2 release and have persisted through the latest 1.3a nightly

A comment on the idea "Please make 'File Location' field editable in the media view window just like Album, Artist, Track Name, etc. metadata." in Songbird:
A good point, there's a lot of room there for personal preference in how things are displayed though I think it's something that should be addressed by adons and not the core program. One big point though is that songbird should translate XML style file names into native OS syntax. The current "file:///c:/users/mike/music/unknown%20album%20artist/album%20name/..." style takes up too much screen real estate and at a quick glance is almost completely unreadable making the current File Location field practically worthless. – 2MNY, on June 18, 2009 03:36

@Kevin, best to just md5 the music portion of the file. – 2MNY, on June 08, 2009 02:44-

the iTunes like exclamation point is a good idea, it would be nice to have a broken link icon(perhaps a broken shell) column available in the media view window. I could easily see this as a future feature of the exorcist. – 2MNY, on May 18, 2009 14:11
2MNY shared an idea in Songbird on May 13, 2009 23:03:
Please make 'File Location' field editable in the media view window just like Album, Artist, Track Name, etc. metadata. Please make the "File Location" metadata field in the library browser editable just like Album, Artist, Track Name,
etc. It is too much of a hassle to delete my entire library and rebuild it just because I have a handful of missing
songs that have been moved to other folders that songbird can't find. With a large library and 50+ large
overlapping playlists it would take months to recreate everything. Much easier to fix broken links as I come across
them while listening.
This is the first step in building a intelligent library that can repair errors with minimum input. This is the
most basic implementation of a fix for Media Core 'resource not found' errors. It is not by any means the best
solution as path names can not be copied and pasted from native file browsers without extensive editing. In short
this is too time consuming and difficult.
Second step is opening a native OS file browser window to find files manually. I think most library based media
players already offer this capability. Checks should be made on chosen files to see if they are already in the
library and a system for resolving conflicts implemented (If a missing file has been moved then added to the
library again, choose if old or new metadata should be used and update playlists to use the correct file). At this
point we can consider the fix functional, but it doesn't meet the high library management standards I feel the
songbird developers are aiming for.
Third step is providing good API support for add-ons to safely change file location. An example of a possible addon
using this feature: Searches one or more locations for a missing song based off of previous file name, previous
file location, track metadata, and file size. Results should be prioritized and an ordered list of best possible
matches should be presented to the user. A file and folder name matching that of the missing file would obviously
be the best match and should rank above a file that only has folder and file names containing text from the artist
and album id3 tags. If the majority of searching is done through the disk MFT, initial results could be obtained
very fast at minimal resource cost while additional in-depth (file metadata) searches are being completed and added
to the list of possible matches.-

I have the same problem on a Windows 7 install. Songbird seems to lock up after typing the first few letters into the search box. As soon as the results for those letters show up the speed runs much smoother. I do have a large library (~15,000 tracks) and a good number of them are missing. It seems the library browser speedups in the latest release could use a little more optimization.-
