NIck started following the question "Is anyone else's Macbook losing plastic around the edge of the keyboard?" in Apple.

Same for me, both sides where the Magnet meets the palm rests. Gutted, I bought this reconditioned from Apple April 2007. I've used it about 30 hours in total and have it in a Speck Case all the time. Its looked after. When i saw this today I freaked.
Its Apple, its Supposed to be Quality, isn't it?
This is a Design Fault and Apple should cover it, if they don't I shall not be happy. This will only get worse and as I type I am not allowing my hands to touch the rests in case it gets worse.
No APP Cover here, so lets see what happens.
I will let you know either way.

I am so glad to have found this thread, as I too thought someone had cracked it. I bought my macbook about 8-9 months ago and it has just developed a crack on the right side. I called Apple and my 90 day phone support had of course expired. They oh so benevolently (cough cough) said that since my hardware was still under warranty, he would offer me a special rate to buy 3 years of phone support. I basically laughed at him, so he offered me an 'exception'. We eventually found an Apple service store here, as there is no Apple Store anywhere near me. I am calling today to see when they can replace it. I did, well my 16 year old daughter, who just got a macbook for her birthday, find a way to hopefully prevent it from happening again. We bought a package of those little silicon 'feet' that are adhesive on one side, used for keeping items from sliding/marking up surfaces. We purchased round ones, that just fit into the top 2 corners of the LCD half of the macbook. We got very low profile ones, around 1/8" thick or so. They seem to stick quite well and when you close the lid, they provide just enough padding to keep it from snapping shut. They also are just thick enough to keep the little plastic things from hitting on the edge of the macbook, hopefully taking care of this ever happening again. The silicon pads are thin enough that the macbook still 'sleeps' if you close it and they are hardly noticeable.
I hope this helps some of you. I do know that I didn't spend all of the money I did on a laptop to have something like this happen. My old laptop (now my son's) is over 6 years old and is like new. I am seriously considering fixing mine, selling it and getting a more solidly constructed 'PC' laptop, even if it isn't as pretty and converting to Linux. There are 2 Mac minis and 2 macbooks in our home as we were converting to macs to flee Windows and to have more energy efficient computers. The minis just sit there and I am happy with them, but I don't know about the laptops, especially as I cart mine around and use it daily for work.

I also like the idea of being able to specify roughly where "home" is, without giving out the exact address. I like the idea of being able to see who's nearby and perhaps discover acquaintances who live in my neighborhood.
I might still want to shout from there (even if the location isn't specified at all) -- people who already know where I live will know what I mean by "home."
As others have described, I settled on using a nearby intersection for the "address" of my home.

Would it be possible to do something like if I add a place and check a box for "home" then I don't need a street address and I can just enter an intersection? I don't want to fake an address but I don't want to give the world my house either. Or allow part of the setup to walk through adding a location and the suggestion is home (which also gets you exceptions to exact street address)?
A) I am not a coder.
B) I am just thinking out loud.

For private locations, I think I'd like to mark areas or districts that I'm in, but more tightly bound than city/state/zip/country; think neighborhoods in Portland terms. That said, having user-definable regions does run the risk of turning into the sort-of-a-mess that is http://www.wikimapia.org.

shizzow already supports multiple place records with the same address. each person in the household would have their private 'home', which can be the same place.
if someone searches that address, they would see the version of the place that belongs to their friend, or a list of the duplicate places if they have multiple friends with the same private home address.

Getting back to the original topic (a special/private/home location). We like the idea, and it sounds simple enough up front, but when you start following the details of different use cases to conclusion you find yourself tackling bigger issues than you'd expect. Here's one example.
A "private" location requires someone to "Administer" it and approve who can see shouts from that location. If you own your own home this is pretty simple, but people in a shared housing environment.. Not so simple. Who get's "ownership" to administrate the location? What happens when the person with ownership moves and doesn't pass ownership to a remaining household member? Especially if it wasn't an amicable departure and they are purposefully not passing ownership. People will need a place to petition problems like this for resolution and we don't have the resources to support it right now.
What we really need is a more elegant solution, and we have a couple ideas, but the basic functionality of getting people together takes priority. I expect this issue to get addressed in the future, though probably not the immediate future.
Cheers,
-Mark

Great comments and conversation... From the beginning we've talked through privacy surrounding Places (over and over again)... We're definitely thinking through how to deal with Places that are considered private, such as one's home, but haven't found the perfect solution just yet.
As for other people's homes, the basic stance that we've taken, is if that person has put their house on Shizzow, we shout from their house. If not, then we don't shout and just go "off the grid" until we're back at a place that is in the Shizzow database. The key here is that it's okay, and you should feel encouraged, to not shout anytime you do not want to disclose your location no matter what the reason is, whether for privacy, security or any other concern you may have.
Cheers,
Ryan

Even with the 'private' option I am still a bit leery of giving out my home address. I was looking for a way to use a major intersection instead of a valid address for my 'home' location, say like 'SE 39th and Hawthorne'. I guess I could use one of the businesses near that intersection for an address but it seems wrong to miss-label an otherwise valid address.
