Hey bsdguru - I checked with the Flickr Ops team and they said it looks to be a transient issue (apparently they weren't seeing any issues with that box).
So not sure that helps. If you still are seeing issues, would you mind sending in a ticket using our Help by Email - http://www.flickr.com/help/contact/
That way we'll be able to track the issue and assign it to an engineer. Thanks.-

Sorry for the delay - I wrote a response this morning and came back to see if it was useful, but something happened and it wasn't there - hopefully this time it saves.
As Eric mentions - there are probably some 3rd party apps to pull down multiple images at a time, but those are unlikely to give you your original resolution images (which you want/need for a high-quality photo book).
Hopefully you won't take this as a plug - b/c I haven't even made a book through this partner, but we do have a relationship w/ Blurb that will allow you to make books from your collection.

I've never made one myself, but have seen the finished product - they're impressive! You'd have to install their client (they support Mac peeps too) and then make your book - it's not iPhoto, but it's not 400 one-by-one downloads either. And looks like they're offering free shipping to Flickr users over the holidays.
Hope this helps...-

popastronaut is right - but you should also be able to do this from your friends' photos page on Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/friends/
... if you look at the bottom of the page towards the pagination, you'll see options to manage which pictures will be shown on that page. The default is all contacts, but if you click 'Only show photos from your family and friends' and then click the 'Feed' RSS button below that, you should be good to go.-
