Hey bsdguru - I checked with the Flickr Ops team and they said it looks to be a transient issue (apparently they weren't seeing any issues with that box).
So not sure that helps. If you still are seeing issues, would you mind sending in a ticket using our Help by Email - http://www.flickr.com/help/contact/
That way we'll be able to track the issue and assign it to an engineer. Thanks.-

tim:
thanks for the redirect to blurb. i am in the process of using blurb for the first time and finding it a little suboptimal from a UI perspective, which is why i thought i'd try, in parallel the iphoto route. you have some other solid partners with whom i tried to work but found them lacking in creative control. perhaps this is just not quite a mature space yet.
Ted, thanks for the redirect to blurb. that might be super helpful since it looks like i'm going to have to try a little harder...

Sorry for the delay - I wrote a response this morning and came back to see if it was useful, but something happened and it wasn't there - hopefully this time it saves.
As Eric mentions - there are probably some 3rd party apps to pull down multiple images at a time, but those are unlikely to give you your original resolution images (which you want/need for a high-quality photo book).
Hopefully you won't take this as a plug - b/c I haven't even made a book through this partner, but we do have a relationship w/ Blurb that will allow you to make books from your collection.

I've never made one myself, but have seen the finished product - they're impressive! You'd have to install their client (they support Mac peeps too) and then make your book - it's not iPhoto, but it's not 400 one-by-one downloads either. And looks like they're offering free shipping to Flickr users over the holidays.
Hope this helps...

I've heard that FlickrDown (http://greggman.com/pages/flickrdown.htm) is a way to do this, but it is a PC app. I'm a Mac guy, so I haven't tried it.-

popastronaut is right - but you should also be able to do this from your friends' photos page on Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/friends/
... if you look at the bottom of the page towards the pagination, you'll see options to manage which pictures will be shown on that page. The default is all contacts, but if you click 'Only show photos from your family and friends' and then click the 'Feed' RSS button below that, you should be good to go.

Solved this puzzle myself using the Flickr api. The feed url
http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/...
does the trick. Remember to insert your user_id in the string and by user_id, I don't mean your old, familiar Flickr login. I mean the obscure one found by logging in and visiting the following page:
http://www.flickr.com/services/api/ex...
This probably should be easier, but thankfully the api documentation doesn't scare me.-
