Doesn't your server identify and collect IP addresses of visitors?
If it does, why register? And why can't you ID the IP of the troublemakers? I understand that IP addresses can be spoofed, but if you don't collect them and try to contact the hosts, the hosts never know they're being spoofed. . . no? . . . then again, some hosts actually encourage spoofers, so where does that help?
So, to make it easy, you require registration - understood. . .

I'm not a fan of first message first. . . I like to dig when the topic draws me to it. . . as it is, you force me to scroll past all the old messages to get to the last remark. . . <<sigh>>

The age of the last reply makes me think the topic has died. . . <<sigh>>

I think reggies are generally a good idea, although a PA option for "Anonymous" is good for the lazy/scared that their boss is gonna find out. Anything to stop the ANNOYING double posting and pretenders. Plus the best thing about PAN is the regulars, and I think you can lock that in with reggies. People love to belong.

For now, at least, maybe we can try registration-optional? You can register right here:

I can see where it's hard to get that balance of ease of use (no registration) and accountability (registration). So, even though they are using their "anonymous identity", they would have to be tracked as the poster when they return, no? That's the only thing that is a bit counter-intuitive to me with that.
Then again, I can be a bit of a devil's advocate for things like this. Or, I just think too much. :)
Off topic, I feel the way you're structuring things here makes for a great environment for sharing and collaborating. My company is looking for ways to bring different areas of the company together, this would be a wonderful tool internally!

We actually had a discussion about this over at /satisfaction a while back. Here's what I said about it then:
"However, you do have to be signed in to reply to a post. There are a few reasons for this, not least of which it creates some accountability so that people will be more likely to play nice. Also, the conversation is integral in fostering a sense of community. If a conversation has several replies from anonymous people it takes something away from that sense of community."
That being said, we've been thinking that if a person created the topic in the first place, they should also be able to reply to it with their "anonymous identity". All of this is still under consideration so we're happy to hear input on the matter. Whatever we do, though, we want to be sure that we're encouraging openness & transparency which does seem to get lost a bit when users aren't registered.

Team Cassandra,
The email confirmation step doesn't actually restrict you from doing anything in the system. It is only taken into account for when we are dealing with spam.
What is happening when you are choosing a new icon? does it give you an error message? Please note that any image you upload has to be under 1 megabyte in size and either a jpg, gif, or png image file.

yes - I did upgrade...and I see the message on my dashboard - in the pink area just under the part where I am, in fact, able to change my email ( It opens up but in an effort to keep things simple I've avoided saving any changes there...)
The message is always there.
Thanks for your attention!
ps. i DO like cupcakes! but i want the other one!:p
