The wording of the post may be a bit confusing. The issue is that all of our International SMS traffic went out over our UK number. So, that made things extra-pricey (sending from the UK to Israel for instance). Local deals will help mitigate this cost. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 19:16

We're working to bring it back in a sustainable way for all. It's past form was not. What startups are you talking about? – Jack, on August 14, 2008 19:05

People have been reporting duplicate messages recently. We don't believe this is our doing, but rather T-mobile or AT&T. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 19:05

I understand your frustration. But, you're right, we were surprised by the adoption of this service. We'd like to do it the right way. And for our users and the sustainability of the company, that means focusing on building a strong core, and seeking partnerships to help bring the service back. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 19:02

Greg, thank you for the feedback. Service in Australia is definitely at the top of our list to support. We are looking at options, and exploring partnerships. Thank you for your patience (and it's awesome to hear about your friend!). – Jack, on August 14, 2008 19:01

This is an idea we considered, but it helps only so much. We're still faced with incremental cost which is not sustainable. We must focus on funding building a rock-solid foundation so we may look at other options to bring SMS back in a cost-effective way for our users. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:57

SMS cost ranges from $0.06 to $0.14 per message depending on the market. We considered passing the cost on to users through a billing mechanism, but International billing is a lot of work, and not something we feel comfortable focusing on before we have a rock-solid foundation. One thing at a time. We get that, then we can look to partnerships and passing cost on (if that makes sense). – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:55

Eric, Thanks, I understand your frustration. There are other reasons that we didn't choose to offer a premium service at the moment. The first is that our focus is still on providing a rock-solid foundation that people can trust. Only when we have that will we be comfortable enough passing costs on to users. It wouldn't be fair to anyone to charge for spotty service. Fixing one thing at a time. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:50

Thank you, Eric. Talking to your telecom would definitely move things faster. They move when (a mass of) you do. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:44

The sorts of filters you mention are a great idea. I definitely don't need an SMS when my friend changes their iTunes track. But, that's infrastructure we don't offer currently.
We're working hard to provide a solid foundation for features like this in the future. That requires engineering, product design, and in some cases business partnerships. One thing at a time.
We looked at passing the cost on to users, but International payments are a difficult thing, and we have to focus on stability before we can take on that challenge. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:38

Good alternatives. We're working hard to provide cost-effective mediums to all users, IM, email, and shoring up our mobile web support are a few. SMS is still at the top of our mind, but we require help bringing that back. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:35

We'll have a number to update from in Germany soon. We can offer delivery again once we have a partnership there. – Jack, on August 14, 2008 18:33
