@ waffles -- It's much worse than that. They've actively refused to provide an update on the status page, have neglected to give feedback on these forums, and clearly are unprepared to handle problems. Really. If you need to charge for a service like this to give it enough support, offer it. People would probably pay for something that works.
It looks like a bunch of open-source developers working on something. Just drop IM support entirely and point people to other services which can augment this feature.

So, is there a reason why nothing is happening with this? Seriously, either get it fixed or just say that you won't be offering IM support. Either way, it should be that hard.
Twitter, you've had about 2 months. If a girl left me hanging like this for 2 months I would leave her without a second thought. If a contractor left a job unfinished for 2 months I would start to file a lawsuit.
I mean, you make the lines at the DMV look like the self checkout at Lowe's.
What's the deal? Is this the kind of service that I can expect from anything from y'all? Yes, you're quick at getting the whales to go away. But you've also set a precedent for being extremely slow at something.
Get your act together.

I have read a lot of posts/comments about this issue. As a new user and many others are new as well.
Sure they have updated/changed the /devices page, but it doesn't say at the top "IM services down" or something, because when you click on the FAQ/Help to setup IM there are instructions on how to do this but it doesn't say that the IM service is down nor does it say on the front page of my updates.
I see the last time any update was made was nearly 2 weeks ago and it has been down over a month now? Twitter is ok... its not the best of the best I've seen even for free but I can't complain its free.

Andy - I'm not sure I'm even smart enough to read your message much less know how to do it - but it is worth a shot. Just the word ping scares me. just so you know - i'm going to type "ping.fm" right up there into where i normally type in "google.com" and if that does nothing - i'm going to sit back whilst you techies all mock me via your iphones. b*stards ;) (she said charmingly)

Amy, you might want to look into ping.fm as jvmoore1 suggested above. You can update it through IM and then it updates your Twitter status almost instantly. – Andy Kaplan-Myrth, on July 11, 2008 02:26

Ohh - i was so excited and signed up thinking I could update at work through IM as I can't get on the web at the office (ACCESS DENIED!!!)...so this could be my one link to the outside normal non-office non-artificial lighting world. It really would have been nice instead of enticing me in with twitters secret seductive whispers of "update by IM and waste hours away instead of earning your mortgage payment in earnest" it said "coming soon! the ability to update by IM"...I do appreciate that I stumbled onto this and found the posting saying they are working on it & though from an impatient and "we put an effing man on the moon, just fix it" stand point, i'd like it NOW - i do realize programming is difficult and you want to QA it or else all of us will be posted how broke a** and sucky it is :) Please just fix it quickly. give the programmers coffee and twinkies and tell them i have work to avoid. thank you kindly for your hard work and your urgency.

@jvmoore1 Thank you so, so, so much! It works. I'm delighted! As far as workarounds for technical problems go, that one's pretty damn good. – cloudscudding, on July 07, 2008 16:27

Yup. That's consistent with my experience. Ping *does* impose some limits (such as not posting more than 3 updates per minute) but since I average around 5 tweets per day it doesn't bother me. Also, if you do use it, I suggest you follow http://twitter.com/pingfm – mdy, on July 07, 2008 15:45
