acordova replied on October 29, 2009 20:52 to the question "New Push Notifications improvements discussion" in Gowalla:
My two concerns:
1. First and foremost, there is no sound associated with a Gowalla push notification. So unless you're looking at your phone when the notification comes in, you won't know it actually arrived. This is a app-level feature, and I'm assuming you guys are working on this for the next update, so no biggie.
2. Since there's no real "official" way to play Gowalla, users could inadvertently bombard their friends with notifications. Like Dr. P, there are plenty of times where I've checked into 35+ places in a very short period of time (mainly because spots are being created a lot closer to each other). Since notifications are opt-out by default, all my friends are now going to hate me.
Is it/would it be possible to turn off notifications when the app is open? I ran into this a few times while Gowalling with my girlfriend, but when notifications pop up in the middle of a check-in, it makes things get messy.
I'd like to see the ability to customize notifications, as in only receive them if your friends check-in to a spot within a certain distance from the last place you checked in, or to turn them off during a certain period of time. From the sound of it, it seems like you guys are working on the latter (woo!).

If you go to your settings page (http://gowalla.com/users/USERNAME/edit), you can uncheck all the settings for emails you don't want to receive.
acordova replied on October 27, 2009 18:55 to the question "List of Places Created?" in Gowalla:
Works for me. However...
It seems that user-created spots that are later turned into featured spots are not listed here. For example, the "Created Spots" counter says I've created 73 spots, but when I count them all, it only lists 72. The missing one? AT&T Park (http://gowalla.com/spots/10677), my user-created-turned-featured spot.
Are featured spots tagged differently in the backend?

acordova replied on October 17, 2009 19:07 to the question "Unable to vault an icon" in Gowalla:
If you're still having this issue, one workaround I found might work. Try adding /vault to the end of the URL (in this case, http://gowalla.com/icons/75894/vault). It should go through the process of vaulting it, even if you can't see the icon information.

joescales and I were talking about that a little while ago, actually. Having a few neighborhood or city admins to take care of this kind of stuff would be pretty neat. I'd gladly do it :) – acordova, on October 09, 2009 05:04

A few location/category mishapsA few more spot fixes!
1. The Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport has 4 spots (one of them created by Team Gowalla), all of which have multiple people checked in to them. Is it possible to combine them all?
2. In an attempt to add a spot in rural Georgia, I got a few bungled spots. These two need to be deleted: http://gowalla.com/spots/24974, http://gowalla.com/spots/24973.
On a side note, I find it hilarious that Gowalla thought I was off the coast of Nigeria :D
3. Move the correct Historic Banning Mills spot (http://gowalla.com/spots/25445) to 33.530713,-84.923792.
4. The Orlando Cepeda statue spot (http://gowalla.com/spots/16580) should be a statue, not a stadium. Same with the Sea Lion statue (http://gowalla.com/spots/17316).
5. Emmy's Spaghetti Shack (http://gowalla.com/spots/26426) should be moved to 37.742816,-122.421277.
acordova replied on September 16, 2009 01:23 to the question "Kilometers vs miles" in Gowalla:
Now, I'm just guessing here, but according to the Apple documentation, the values for Core Location accuracy are in metric (specifically, "Nearest Ten Meters," "Hundred Meters," "Kilometer," and "Three Kilometers"), so it would make sense if the values Gowalla is spitting out are related to that.
That's not to say that the metric values can't be converted (1km = 0.6mi)...
