I had made some changes to the updater with the patch last night to try and force the updates to download. Are you still getting the same error in the updater log file?:
"Checking file: C:\Program Files\RescueTime\RescueTime.exe
Client file CRC matches server. File will not be downloaded." ?

The new update patch should now be ignoring the CRC check and forcing a download.

I have win xp in german and firefox in us english

I'm still getting the bug with the update on my home PC, but not at work. Update fails, and crashes Rescue Time. Probably better if the default is not to automatically update - at least that way I would be able to run the old version until a new working one was in place.

It's telling me there is an update even when I just downloaded from the website. I did an uninstall of RescueTime - which left the directory in Program Files. I also deleted that. My guess is that something in the registry about the version of RescueTime is not being removed by the uninstaller, and is not updated by the installer - so Rescue Time tries to update according to that.

I have the same issue with firefox 2.0.0.8 and the new version of rescuetime client as well. Once the client opened, the CPU usage of Firefox goes up to 100%

I'm running Firefox en-US 2.0.0.8.

Everything on my machine is English (US), all the settings and software, except for the region setting, which I now had to revert back to English (US) for 0.9.5. =)

I'm going under the assumption that certain language versions of Firefox are not compatible with the new data collector.

While I am troubleshooting, you can get back up and running by uninstalling RescueTime 0.9.6 and re-installing from this file: http://www.rescuetime.com/installers/...

If I could get you guys to give me feedback on what language settings you have set in Windows and which language version of Firefox you are using, I will try to duplicate this issues on our test boxes. Hopefully it's a quick fix and I can get you guys back up and running with 0.9.6!

same here. however, even though RescueTime's CPU usage stays sane, Firefox's CPU usage is between 44% and 50% all the time (i.e. not only on scan intervals). this drops to 0% the moment I close RescueTime.

I have a dual-core processor, so that's the reason it stays at or below 50% and doesn't go all the way up to 100%.

P.S. I replaced my hostname and username with starts, so that's not the problem =)

Yeah - that installed 0.9.6.78.

But I got overexcited and just uninstalled then reinstalled without checking the version for you. I guess if it is a real bug then you'll hear from others too :-)

You can check the RescueTime.exe file properties and that should give you the version number (Default c:\Program Files\RescueTime\RescueTime.exe). However, if you have restarted the update a couple of times and the same thing happens, I'm pretty sure the file you have is still the 0.9.5 version.

Hmm - problem is that when I start RescueTime it tries to do the update then says it has failed and closes. So I can't get to wherever I would find the version.

I'll try the second option - but you should note the proble,.

The memory use between the 0.9.5 and 0.9.6 data collectors changed about 5mb on average, so it shouldn't be too much more than what was running before.

As far as the Firefox slowdowns, that is bothersome. RescueTime only does checks during the Scan Interval, which is defaulted to every 5 seconds. The changes made to the Firefox scans are a bit more intensive than the previous version, but on all of our test systems we were not able to tell the difference between the two versions.

Some things to check:

What is your Scan Interval set at? Default is 5 seconds and that is usually a good place to start. You could also try to set this up to see if that makes a difference for you

What language version of Firefox are you using? We haven't tested all languages, so it is possible that the new search routines are slow on certain language versions of Firefox.

If you watch the CPU usage in the Task Manager for RescueTime.exe, you should see it sitting at 0% most of the time, during the scan interval it will jump to between 3% and 30% very briefly and then back down to 0%. Is this what you are seeing?

If you are seeing really high CPU usage with the RescueTime.exe, you might want to exit and restart the application to see if that makes a difference.

Let me know if any of that helps at all - we can always get you back to the older version while we try to troubleshoot why it is slow on your system.

my update uses between 24 and 32 mb of ram and makes firefox EXTREMELY slow - surfing impossible.

Can you verify that your RescueTime.exe file is still at version 0.9.5.1? I looks like it thinks the versions are the same between what you have on your system and the update server. We've seen some caching issues that I'll have to dig into if this is the case.

Another option is to uninstall the current version of RescueTime and download the new installer from www.RescueTime.com/download. If you choose to do a re-install, make sure you exit RescueTime before running the uninstall. The new installer/uninstaller will check is RescueTime is running, but the older version did not.
