Agree the contract sales folk are keeping this quiet. Presumably, given that the device contains a Bluetooth chip, a future software update could reverse this ridiculous lockdown. I just can't understand the commercial rationale behind it. It won't even let you use a Bluetooth keyboard FFS. Suggest the best way forward is to pressure Apple to reverse this nonsensical and ultimately commercially detrimental policy and RELEASE THE BLUETOOTH! We're in the open, networked era now Mr Jobs... Emulating the lockdown, lock-out tactics of your former nemesis in Redmond just doesn't cut it any more. Yes, you've got the sexiest technology, but if you want to win some love from more than the fanboys, try being less like MS and more like Google. Is anyone from Apple HEARING Me?

Bluetooth not working on iPhone 3g - by fault or design?Just got my 3g iPhone. While out and about today, I tried to send a video from my Nokia E70 via Bluetooth, but Nokia can't see the iPhone, even though Bluetooth is clearly on and iPhone says 'Now Discoverable'. The iPhone sees the Nokia, but refuses to pair with it. When I got home, I tried connecting to my laptop via Bluetooth. That can't see the iPhone either. Is this some kind of insane Jobsian device lockdown OR do I have a faulty handset OR is it a software problem that will will be fixed with a forthcoming update (I hope a swift one)? Just seen a similar thread about the original iPhone that would suggest the answer is (a). I do hope not.
If it is, then how else can I connect my Nokia to the iPhone locally to transfer data between them. One of my main reasons for getting an iPhone DESPITE its (current) lack of video was because I thought I could use my exisitng phone to shoot video and transfer it across via Bluetooth while on the move.
And, again, if it is locked down in this way, then what on earth is the rationale behind preventing users from doing something like this that harms no commercial interests whatsoever?
jimjarmo asked a question in Yahoo! on June 27, 2008 19:54:
Help needed with REGEX matchingYahoo Pipes: Query about 'Matches regex' in Filter:
I am trying to create a filter that returns a match if it finds two or more occurrences of particular substrings from a set list (either two or more occurrences of the same substring, or a single occurence of two or more of the substrings in my list). So, if my list was "red", "blue" and "green" (it actually has more items), I would want it to return results that would be the same as those from the BOOLEAN search:
(red AND red) OR (blue AND blue) OR (green AND green) OR (red AND blue) OR (red AND green) OR (blue AND green)
I also want the search to be case-insensitive and to include derivative words (e.g. "reds", "greenish", "bluegrass", etc.)
Precisely what would I need to type into 'Matches regex' box to obtain this result? Reading various (mainly quite confusing) tutorials online, I came up with "(item1|item2|item3){2,}", which didn't seem to work, despite me trying different types of brackets/no brackets (they varied in the tutorials I looked at) and putting the individual items inside quotation marks (or not). Where am I going wrong?
Can anyone help this struggling regex newbie?
A comment on the idea "Twitter/Facebook syncing should prepend " twittering: " or similar" in Twitter:
Indeed - and they should fix it, but I guess twitter's developers have a fair bit on their 'to do' list :). I have no problem with switching to a TP app, though - particularly one with far better functionality and which doesn't even ask for my twitter password. After all, Twitter's success has been in large part built on the openness of its API and the explosion of TP apps and add-ons. – jimjarmo, on May 13, 2008 23:58

Tim - as per the above posts, use the third-party twittersync application to update your facebook status rather than twitter's own offering. That gives you the option to prepend with a customisable string (like mrdctaylor, I'm using "[via twittersync]" to give them a bit of publicity) as well the option to filter certain tweets that you *don't* want to update your facebook status (e.g. @ messages). – jimjarmo, on May 13, 2008 21:12

The best solution seems to be to amend the facebook app to allow users to choose whether their tweet is prepended, and if so by what text. Also, as I said earlier in this thread (6 months ago) it would be great to be able to choose which tweets update facebook by using some sort of tag in the tweet, or at the very least a tick-box option to say 'don't update status if message starts with @'.

Any chance of a Chumby widget?Probably not top of your priority list, I know, but as a Chumby user I'd love to see a widget that displays my Socialthing lifestream. At the moment mine has to cycle through a series of widgets for twitter, flickr, facebook etc. for me to see what all my friends are up to.

jimjarmo shared an idea in Twitter on February 28, 2008 23:58:
Tools to track what's being tracked?Be great to be abe to see a ranking of the most popular tracked words/phrases among twitterers. The two 'charts' that I think would be especially useful (although there is scope for others) are:
(1) the most common trackwords added in the previous 7 days (to gauge what's on twitterers' minds currently), and
(2) simple ranking by number of tracks for a particular word/phrase (to gauge what interests us generally).
The ability to see a list of twitterers tracking a particular word would also be useful (provided they had 'opted in' to making their tracks public, for obvious privacy reasons) - it could be a great way to connect to others with similar interests.
Another useful feature would be a tool that would enable a user to input a particualr word or phrase and receive back tracking stats for that particular word/phrase (number of trackers, usernames of those tracking it publicly, etc) .
And if all this sounds like too much of a development challenge for the already-busy folks at Twitter, I'm fairly confident that with the appropriate API additions, third-party developers would rise to it. (I'm not a developer myself, I hasten to add, so for all I know this is already possible.)
