Well, I don't give out my Twitter credentials lightly, and really, groups would only be marginally useful since it breaks the all-or-nothing paradigm of Twitter. Earlier today I found a 3rd-party site called Twitter Groups that does allow one to set import all your Twitter contacts & set up groups to whom you wish to tweet:

However, it appears you are required to post your tweet from that site. Still, it gets at what folks are talking about needing in some cases above...

This is an interesting thread, and something that would be very cool (probably more so for the people following me than for me!). I'd like to add to the thoughts of Ross about applying this concept to receiving rather than posting. I started a seperate thread (before I saw this one) here

There is a 3rd party service www.grouptweet.com, that sort of accomplishes this. The service was offline for a while because people were inadvertently entering their personal twitter account info and thereby publishing all direct messages to the whole world, but it appears to be back online now.

The grouptweet service isn't really "there yet" as far as the functionality I think people would like to see inside twitter itself. You need to create a new account and have people follow it before it really works. It would be nice if there was a way to simply group your own contacts without bothering them to sign up or follow a new user for that purpose.

Ok, I've read through all these posts, but it appears we STILL don't have groups, is this correct? Can someone please tell me if we do or don't (I don't understand everything that was discussed above), and/or whether there is some other way to pull this off?

Addressing system stability did cause this to get pushed a bit. But it has been worked on and there is more work to do. I don't have guidance on the launch of this change but it is in our active list of projects.

I'm anxious for the feature as well. However, it actually was addressed. If you look at the top of the page you'll see "The best answer from the company" in which goldtoe says:

"It is our intention to fix it. Unfortunately, it is a difficult change, so I don't have a specific timeline for the fix. I would guess it's days-weeks not weeks-months, however."

That was 25 days ago which is still, arguably, within his estimate of "days-weeks". I know they were dealing with a pretty big caching issue last week so that's probably held them up as well. I also know how it goes with product development and that it generally takes longer than you think to get new features out the door.

Perhaps goldtoe can come back and give us an update on the ETA of this feature?
