Although I can see how this new system works for many, it still doesn't work for me or anyone dealing with a mixed-use development with one street address. In my case I live in a large building with retail and restaurants on the ground level. I'd like to be able to check in publicly to a restaurant or gallery but not my actual residence. If we had actual private placemarks, this would work fine. Unfortunately, the setting of one (my residence) overrides another (a store) because we share the same address. I really hope this will be resolved in the future. This would seem a potential hassle for many folks. Thanks for taking the concept this far.
I would still really, really love to be able to toggle the Twitter feed easily *without* having to go into private mode. I don't actually care whether anyone knows where I live; I just don't want it pushed to Twitter every time I return home and dutifully check in. I also may go somewhere like a grocery store where I'd like to check in publicly but don't think the Twitterverse would care. In a perfect BK world, activity at certain placemarks could also be designated as being fed (or not) to Twitter (and perhaps future services), independent of privacy settings.

Hey guys, check out the blog. Not sure what the time frame is, but they are starting a private beta now.

what about i.am.the.pi.mp - or will.you.be.my.pi.mp? :)
seriously though, can you allow alpha testers the ability to move around the namespace - not sure i like the name i have now, and wasn't sure i wanted e.g. imajes.mp (at least as my cool name).
Also - it'd be better to show the allowable characters too.

Would have to agree there. All it takes is the facebook app which is already out and stable enough on the iPhone, to do an upddate. With its very large user base it would own this space. – lantrix, on August 20, 2008 05:38

Yep I totally agree. I think it's frankly lame of BK to throw out the "we'd rather have a stable app" excuse. There's no excuse for not releasing something on day 1, much less now 6 weeks later? We have a large handful of quite stable apps out there that do the exact same thing as BK (some of them on day 1!) What is BK's problem? Clearly for one it's bad programmers and/or bad product managers.
By not having even a minimally functional app on day 1, BK lost, lost big, and continues every day to lose iPhone users that will never come back. BK at this point must not only come out with a good app, but come out with a great app that toally blows away the competition in every way (and of course be free). Unless BK has new functionality on the backend that they haven't yet divulged, there is no reason to expect that BK can do this. They are now fast becoming an "also ran" in the localized-pictureified-twitter race. Sorry.
I'll still try it when it launches, but I honestly don't expect BK to be able to catch up to all these other apps and companies that have such a head start. Plus, surely twitter itself (or facebook) can tomorrow integrate all this stuff into their system and suddenly there's no reason to bother with a third party site?

indeed. i have no idea why app stores have to be different (i guess i understand sometimes) but there are a lot of apps that i just can't understand... – maique, on August 19, 2008 16:47

I'm sorry to have to say this, but this is really getting silly. There are new iPhone tracking apps being launched every day. It's more then a month ago now, that the native iPhone app was announced, it's about time to release it!
Oh, and please make sure it's not only released in the US appstore :-S
