Just wanted to say thanks for this App. Keeps me from dealing with SMS checkins. – Bradley, on November 11, 2008 19:46

Gary, unfortunately we don't have any updates with this. We have a lot on our plate at the moment and a BB app is still near the top of a very long to do list. We hope to work on this as soon as we can, but at this point we don't have a timeframe. – Lesley, on November 10, 2008 23:45

Brightkite app on iPhone 3G works like a charm (my wife has it). So what about all us early-adopter bizness movers and shakers who would virally influence half of creation if we had a real app on our Blackberrys rather than just m.brightkite.com??? Don't you want to tap into the power of ours? Or do we just have to make do with location-dumb Facebook & Twitter apps? :-(

Would you believe I almost gave in and purchased an iPhone to replace my Blackberry just so I could run the Brightkite app! However I soon came to my senses and realised there are things I like about my blackberry that the iPhone does not do.
Anyway, hopefully the blackberry users are next on the list. As the Blackberry version will be developed in Java, J2ME, it might be possible then to port it to the Symbian platform, thus killing two birds with one stone.

I just got an iPod Touch and the BrightKite app is AWESOME. With a Touch, though, I can only access the internet through wifi, and that's not universal like a cell signal. I still hope for BrightKite on the Blackberry! Six months ago it was said that a version was in progress...any update, guys? It's clearly wanted!

I think it would be a great idea. I use twitter all the time, partially because I have a choice of apps (I usually use Twibble or TwitterBerry) for the site. If you could get your location from GPS, that would be even better (Twibble does this but tends to overwrite past posts/tweets/whatever we're calling it this week with the current location.) I'm new to BK, but a client for my BB would definitely pique my interest.

I see Blackberry and Symbian as the devices that next need applications for Brightkite. In that order of course :)
See my blog post here http://www.g6phf.co.uk/site/?p=137 .
As the Blackberry app will be written in Java, J2ME... I assume it will also be a good start for a Symbian app too, which I'm guessing will be J2ME too.
So whoever gets it underway will likely be contributing to 2 platforms ticked!
Ideally it needs to mimick the iPhone app I think, as this is by the looks of it an excellent job by the brightkite team. Makes sense to work to the layout that they have already designed whilst working round the differences of the Blackberry.
There are details on my blog about what is needed and some example stuff in case any developer stumbles upon this :)
Thanks!
M

Hmmm, that is strange. Not sure what is going on there, but at least it is working again. If you experience it again let me know and I will try and dive deeper into the issue. – jemerick, on October 16, 2008 17:10

It started saying ??? instead of an actual placemark in the "currently checked in" line and the list of placemarks was empty. After reading your comment I went back and retyped my credentials and it started working again. I did not however change anything on the BK site. Thanks. – nedim, on October 16, 2008 16:56

@nedim What exactly is not working? I have been using it with no issues. Did you change your username/password and not update it in BBPlacemarks perhaps? – jemerick, on October 16, 2008 16:45

@nedim,
I agree with you on both points. BBerry has a much larger market share than the iPhone and will have for the foreseeable future. How does it make business sense to ignore this early adopter group (BBerrys' were smart phones long before the iPhone hit the market) and concentrate on the iPhone.
Also, I agree with your point on the mobile website. That's a fail. Give me an app that I can install and that works and I'll use it. Until then, BrightKite is just not very bright.

A for effort to jemerick :-)
This app stopped working for me few days ago. I'm suspecting change in the API on the BK side. – nedim, on October 16, 2008 14:38

I understand companies focusing on iPhone right now, it's a shiny new toy and the coolaid is hard to resist. However, BlackBerry has bigger market share and it doesn't restrict apps from working properly (think background processes).
And also, mobile website, wap or whatever else that works in a browser is not acceptable! Brightkite is an interesting app, but there are dozen others that do the same.
