In fairness to the lads, numbering systems are not the easiest thing in the world to get right and once you've settled on one, you're pretty much stuuck with it.
Trouble is there is no mandated method otherwise everyone's life would be simple, if less plesurable.
One way (sorry to add more ideas) is to have a strict sequential method but with tags added. Blinksale does that and it works effectively
A comment on the idea "Invoice Numbering" in FreeAgent Central:
Hmmm...HMRC get sniffy about not seeing things in direct sequence. They don't specify the numbering method but they won't like stuff such as ABC1001....1003 + BCD1001...1003. Their argument is you could eqasily have missed an entire sequence. Enforcing a sequence gives them comfort. One way to overcome is to have invoice numbering with either a prefix or suffix that allows you to track projects when the invoice is printed out (g-d forbid) – Dennis Howlett, on June 05, 2008 15:26
A comment on the question "Do you support multiple currencies?" in FreeAgent Central:
Commiserations - I've had the problem for 11 years though pre-Euro it meant managing 10 currencies on expenses. Tip - if this helps: I draw down from PayPal in Euros - all my recipts are in $$ to the Euro bank account. (I live in Spain so report in Euros - the same idea works for GBP)That way I'm receiving 'actual' value I can put to my accounts. I don't bother with worrying about conversion at time of billing etc as it's all pretty irrelevant for accounting purposes. Accountants might argue otherwise in the detail but as an ex-accountant used to dealing with this situation I can say the only thing you need worry about is being able to show the PayPal statement to 'prove' what you've done. – Dennis Howlett, on May 14, 2008 22:48

Robin - properly handling multiple currencies isn't trivial - as I'm sure you're finding out. Articulating it in software can be a royal PITA so I'm not surprised the lads are being cautious about time to availability. BUT, if they do get it done then as far as I know they'll be the only provider in their class to offer that. It makes a HUGE difference. Hang in there, it will be worth it. FWIW - I'm in the same boat. All funds received in ££ or $$ but I mostly need € !!
To make matters worse, I get expenses in ££, $$ and €€. eek. – Dennis Howlett, on May 14, 2008 22:26

Great advice for startupsRyan Carson has started creating videos about startup issues. His first one is about how to save money and what to include in a cashflow forecast. It can be found at: http://www.thinkvitamin.com/features/...
It could be the best 8 minute investment of your business career. We like. A lot.
