I, too, agree with jodiem's point. I can control who sees my tweets in twitter.
Lesley: I wasn't able to find anything within the customize links that enabled posting when set to private. My updates continue to *not* to post to twitter. If I switch to public, the posts make it through fine.
But I don't want these updates to be public in Brightkite.
mdy replied on July 30, 2008 08:47 to the question "What name should I use to reply to SMS verification?" in Twitter:
Hi. If you're asked to provide a user name after you text in the verification code, it means Twitter was not able to match the phone number that is sending the verification code to the phone number you entered in http://twitter.com/devices.
Instead, Twitter thinks you're a new user trying to sign-up via the phone so Twitter asks you for your name.
There's a detailed explanation of this in another thread. Click here to see.

Not silly at all! I thought I had done it right (even doublechecked) but I went and logged out of twitter and sure enough, the pass i thought I was using wasn't correct. then i remembered i changed it a week ago (on mobile) and forgot. duh. the "your Twitter credentials are invalid" thing was on in Brightkite but I was just ignoring it thinking it was something wrong with Bright kite :) – bodhi, on July 21, 2008 23:33

With your posts set to "Hidden" these will not show up on Twitter. This would need to be set to "City" or "Exact" to share properly. I know this next part may sound silly, but have you double checked your Twitter username and password you have entered on Brightkite to make sure that those are correct? If they're not and you go into the Sharing tab, you'll see a message like "your Twitter credentials are invalid". – Lesley, on July 21, 2008 23:21

it is check-ins and all posts that are not sharing to twitter. i have checkins at "city" and posts "hidden" for "Everyone else". It has been a problem for a week or so now, but had not seen it before. you're welcome – bodhi, on July 21, 2008 19:26

Bodhi, is it just your checkins that are not sharing to Twitter or is it all posts? Do you have both checkins and posts set to "City" for Everyone else? Is this a constant problem or do you experience it sporadically? Thanks. – Lesley, on July 21, 2008 19:19

Thanks for the reply Lesley, the customized settings look fine... my issue is probably a twitter problem due to their daily problems... i'll leave it private and watch it a few days. But it was like it worked fine until i made the profile private but now i've switched it on and off but doesn't seem to work either way – Russell, on July 02, 2008 18:21

Russell, we now have customizable Twitter settings if you go under Account Settings -> Sharing and click the "Customize" links. You can choose what information goes to Twitter regardless of your privacy settings. :) – Lesley, on July 02, 2008 16:47

I would really like this feature too. Because I have a private twitter account and I have a private Brightkite account. That just means that I don't want the WHOLE world knowing about things I'm doing. I still want to be able to use Brightkite and let my twitter friends know what I'm up to. There needs to be an inbetween privacy setting.

"Your privacy settings apply." I totally missed that text before. But, yes, it would be cool if it stuck out a little more and/or the wording was updated.
Is there a discussion or FAQ about why it is important that Brightkite only updates Twitter while in public mode?
For example, I don't want the general public to be able to know where I am. But I would want my Twitter friends on my private Twitter profile to know where I am. – ~JOSh-X, on May 04, 2008 22:13
