Aaron Antrim asked a question in Skype on February 22, 2009 19:29:
How long does it take for my online number to become active?Hi, I signed up for an online number.
When I go to "setup online number" in my control panel, I see the number I signed up for under reserved numbers, like this:
Number Location Reserved for Status
(503) 616-4480 United States, (503) | Beaverton 15 days Processing
It's been this way for several days (been counting down from 19 days. Will it be another 2 weeks before my number becomes available?
Aaron Antrim replied on February 13, 2009 18:35 to the question "Bus question?" in Humboldt Transit Authority:
Hi Sylvie:
There are many different itineraries available, depending on the day and time you want to travel.
Fortunately, Google Transit can help you figure them out.
This link will show you the next available departures:
http://tinyurl.com/b7fdcz
Click through the three itineraries listed under "Suggested trips with upcoming departures" to compare all the options.
If you want to try planning other trips, you can go to www.google.com/transit and enter in your starting and ending location. Remember to include the cities in these locations (ie: 720 Wood Street, Eureka CA and Valley East, Arcata).
You can also access the trip planner from Humboldt County's transit websites, linked from www.hta.org.

Aaron Antrim shared an idea in Umpqua Bank on February 11, 2009 20:54:
Umpqua customers live and work in SE Portland, tooI live in Southeast Portland, near SE Morrison & 30th. I've noticed that the SE quadrant seems to be the only quadrant in which Umpqua does not have a location in Portland. Do you have any plans to open a location in this area? I think it would be appreciated by many of your customers.
Aaron Antrim gave praise in Newsberry on January 16, 2009 20:29:
I received great support for how to exclude people I've already mailed to from a new mailing. Thx!Hi,
I just wanted to say that I am a new Newsberry customer, and I had a great customer support experience off of GetSatisfaction, but I wanted to post the response here to share it with others that may find it useful.
Basically, I had a list of about 40 people I wanted to exclude from a new email campaign. But when I entered these addresses as criteria in the sub-list feature, that overwhelmed newsberry.
Support came back with a great suggestion for how to do this easier and more powerfully.
Here it is.

Hi Aaron
Its Andrey. I'm in charge of technical support.
I'm sorry for inconvenience. It's seems to me, that the query, that you passed when edited sublist was longer then we support. Our sublists functionality is complex and, unfortunately, its very difficult to make it longer.
Don't worry, the system is pretty flexible and allow you to
specify up to, approximately, about 20 rules to the sublist selection criteria. The problem is in length of the rules. They can't be so long.
Now, let's discuss of whether our system allows you to do what you want. Yes, it does! But in another way. It a bit longer, but, as for me, much more powerful.
If you need to include or exclude a big number of subscribers its better to mark the subscribers with the flag that storing in a custom field and then use it in a search criteria of sublist.
Here is the plan:
1. Open an import page on the same list "MasterList" and put the list of subscribers you want to exclude
2. Put a flag, for instance a digit "1" after each subscriber separated by a coma. That flag will be used to exclude those subscribers from sublist.
I've just created the file for you that was attached to the email. You can use it.
3. Make an import those subscribers. On the step where the system is asking you to select source of columns, set the name for a new column where you put "1" flag. For instance "SendExcludeFlag".
Don't worry, the system will not create duplicates if your import contains the subscribers that already exist in the list. Those subscribers will not be neither duplicated or missed. Instead, they will be updated. And each of subscribers, that you specified in the list, will have that new "SendExcludeFlag" custom field.
4. Open the list and edit the same sublist that you previously edited - "Oregon".
When you will specify the rules, instead of using Email field with the list of your subscribers (as you did previously), use "SendExcludeFlag" "Does not contain" "1"
I had to delete that rule where you pass those emails because of system requirements, but the file that i gave you contains all emails from that criteria
After that you can send your campaign with using the sublist you just created and make sure that marked subscribers was excluded.
I hope my explanation will help you.
Can you tell me why you were not able to import all subscribers for the first time? Was it because of the system error or something related to our system?
I really need to know, what should be improved to make the system more flexible and friendly.
Thanks!
Aaron Antrim asked a question in Apple on January 03, 2009 22:38:
Why can't I buy a new MacBook Pro with a matte (non-glossy) display? There are a lot of things I like about my new MacBook Pro (unibody, with glossy display), which just replaced my old MacBook Pro.
One of the things I really don't like is the glossy display. I see all the lights in my office reflected in my display. In fact, I had ordered an LED Cinema Display, too, and I sent it back because I realized its glossy display would pose similar problems?
Why is Apple offering only glossy displays now on many of their products? Matte displays are much easier on my eyes. I realize they don't offer the same contrast or dark blacks, but really, I still strongly prefer the matte displays.

I get a message at Lulu that says the product isn't available. Is this a temporary problem? Do you know when it will be fixed?

Aaron Antrim replied on November 20, 2008 19:19 to the idea "Flag Stops - get them known and used through Google Transit" in Humboldt Transit Authority:
Well, I think at this point there are strong reasons to choose not to put unofficial or even semi-official unsigned flag stops out there in the passenger-facing information. HTA/RTS feels the risk of confusing passengers unfamiliar with riding the bus or committing to serve and pick up at unsigned stops are too great. It's interesting to compare how various bus systems deal with this issue. Some are super-strict — only signed stops; others will seem to stop anywhere.
A comment on the idea "Flag Stops - get them known and used through Google Transit" in Humboldt Transit Authority:
Derek: I like the approach, except I think the toggle for showing non-timing points (flag stops, etc.) on the timetables may be overkill.
Tell me if I am wrong, but I am actually starting to feel that the Redwood Transit System website is actually starting to have a bit too many ways of seeing schedules. HTA and I have invested time in experimenting on different approaches, which is good, but now I feel its time to identify what works and stick to that, and actually prune down options.
Here's what I am thinking: an interactive map that shows all possible stop points, and then a timetable that actually shows less timing points than it does now (for example, just a few of the timing points on 4th and 5th in Eureka would be shown). By looking at the map, people could see all possible stop locations and infer the stop times from the more streamlined timetable. That'll be more like TriMet and many other agencies. We'll see. In the meantime, your feedback is always appreciated. – Aaron Antrim, on November 16, 2008 22:28

Tybie: For various reasons, I am trying to publish a new Google Transit feed for Humboldt County sometime next week (which will have shape information, so the bus routes follow the street grid). I think we'll go with the current scheduling information and then incorporate those extra signed stops later. Shouldn't be too hard to do, but will involve some extra work
It may be good to take the time to make sure we have a thorough inventory of signed stops that aren't included right now. Here's the list of new stops that aren't included. Does anyone have extras to add?
To see where any of these locations are, just copy and past the lat/lon into Google Maps and press search.
Also, note that I am not currently sure which of these are truly signed stops and which are flag stops (without a sign). I'll invite Patch, who collected this data, to enlighten us.
We need to be careful in defining flag stops and extra stops. Note the recent post about some stops being skipped in Fortuna. Publishing more stop locations can mean committing to them, and buses can and do get behind schedule!

TybieJF: I spoke with Greg Pratt, Operations Manager for HTA, about this, and, since the latest bus stop location data that Patch Hofweber gathered from riding the RTS Mainline includes some signed stops that aren't included on timetables, I may try to see that these stop locations are included in the beta interactive system map and in Google Transit.
However, including unsigned "flag stops" would be risky, because the bus isn't guaranteed to stop there if it runs a deviated route or is running behind schedule.
What do you think of this approach?

Hi,
I'd like to join the group and find out what's happening — I would like to have better ways of traveling between Arcata and Portland.
However, you did not include a URL for the group in your post. Could you please provide this URL?
For this season's Community Wheel magazine, Green Wheels has an article on longhaul transportation options from Kalia Scarla (particularly inspired by and addressing the lack of options for travel north from Arcata).
If you'd like to provide feedback on this article, or offer some more information on your efforts that could add to this article, that would be great.
Cheers,
Aaron

Amtrak also offers daily service between the SF Bay Area and locations as far north as Arcata. Their bus goes to Martinez, and then you transfer to a Capitol Corridor train bound to Oakland. There are easy connections to BART. Amtrak is often much less crowded and has more space than Greyhound but costs more and has longer travel time. See www.amtrak.com
A comment on the question "Riders still want expanded service!" in Humboldt Transit Authority:
I think creating a partnership to use the casino bus for transportation would be a fantastic idea. I don't have any contacts at the casino, but I hope you will contact them to see about making something happen. Get in touch and let us know what happens so we can mobilize some support and help! – Aaron Antrim, on July 24, 2008 01:49
