I am having the same problem with my 2yr old Lenovo T61p. A few minutes after I plug in, the laptop (probably system board; not the battery) becomes incredibly hot and unsuable as a "laptop". I have started using a metal tray (used for baking) as a heat sink to work but eventually I have to just unplug due to overheating. I noticed that the fan runs just fine when plugged in so it is not defective nor does it sound different (e.g. due to dust build-up). I am afraid of leaving it on the sofa unplugged since it gets really hot (fire hazard?).
This problem has started happening around the same time when I got a new Lenovo battery from Lenovo. Unfortunately I upgraded to Windows 7 RTM at the same time when I got a new battery. But all my drivers are up to date as far as I can tell (in device manager). My application load / characteristics are also unchanged (typical browser/productivity apps like Outlook/Word for the most part)
New battery part number is 42T4619. BTW, the battery itself is nice and cool. All the heating problem is with the system board (I just removed the battery while I am plugged in).
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
