IIya, I totally agree. Thanks for sharing how it works in Google Reader. Although I knew it existed, I've never actually used the PostRank extension for GR. I like how you can select the filter level with the dropdown above the feed items. I like how it shows the PR score. And I like how you can choose to either hide the filtered items or lower their opacity. It looks like it's integrated perfectly!
I think something very similar to the way it functions in Google Reader would be totally awesome in FeedDemon.
Richard Davies replied on November 10, 2009 18:49 to the idea "AideRSS support in FeedDemon" in PostRank:
If it's possible to see the ranking, that would be fine. But it's not critical. When you choose a PostRank filter level you know any items that appear in the feed are above a certain cutoff point. For example, if I want to see only the "better" posts (let's say 6+ on a 1-10 scale), it's not critical to know if an item that appears in the feed is a 7 or an 8. I already know it's a "better" post and I don't have to waste time myself filtering out other posts that are below a 6.
I agree with Jim that this approach is more limiting and offers less instant UI feedback. I think his suggestion is more along the lines of Nick's original approach of querying each individual item for it's score. And as I said earlier, this approach is probably better, assuming there's a way to make it work.
The biggest hurdle that I see with Jim's suggestion is that if FeedDemon is filtering out individual posts based on a PostRank score, it would lead to some sort of mismatch between unread items in FeedDemon and Google Reader because FeedDemon would be ignoring the "hidden" items. Maybe FeedDemon should just automatically mark any hidden items as read?
Richard Davies replied on November 10, 2009 17:52 to the idea "AideRSS support in FeedDemon" in PostRank:
I guess I had envisioned a slightly different integration approach. Rather than requesting each item's ranking individually so that FeedDemon can determine if the item ranks high enough to be displayed, I was just thinking that when you subscribe to a feed in FeedDemon that there would be an optional option to choose a PostRank filter level (i.e. good, better, or best) and FeedDemon would use some PostRank API to get the appropriate PostRank feed URL for the selected filtering level. FeedDemon would then subscribe to this PostRank URL instead of the original feed URL.
This approach allows PostRank to do all of the filtering and only the items that meet the filter requirements are included in the RSS XML, so only the appropriate items appear in FeedDemon and/or Google Reader.
I think Nick's approach is more flexible and would probably be a better approach if there's a way to make it work, but I wanted to suggest this alternate approach if the other one isn't possible.

How do I "unshare" a dataset with a friend?I've shared a dataset with several people, but now I need to revoke several people's access. How do I do that?-

I had the same problem and your solution worked for me. I disabled all extensions, then re-enabled xmarks, then re-enabled the rest of my extensions. – Richard Davies, on May 11, 2009 04:09-

Can Smart Look work with URLs using non-standard document extensions? Our CMS stores documents in a database. Those documents are published with URLs like "www.example.com/index.cfm?document=12345" When that URL is requested a server-side script retrieves the document from the database and returns it to the browser the same as if the URL linked directly to the document file.
Since the URL doesn't contain a normal document extension like .doc, .pdf, .ppt, etc. Smart Look doesn't seem to recognize that the link is actually a document. Is there any way to get it to work in this situation?
Richard Davies shared an idea in PostRank on October 28, 2008 19:26:
AideRSS support in FeedDemonI would really, really, REALLY like it if AideRSS/PostRank support was integrated into the FeedDemon desktop news reader application. I know that it's been integrated into their web reader (Newsgator) for some time now, so they definitely aren't opposed to the concept.
Please work with them and encourage them to add this support into FeedDemon!
Richard Davies reported a problem in Mozilla on October 22, 2008 18:20:
Twitterfox won't open after installing UbiquityAfter installing Ubiquity, I noticed that my Twitterfox extension didn't work any more. Clicking the Twitterfox icon on the status bar did not bring up the Twitterfox window. I disabled Ubiquity and Twitterfox started working again.
I originally thought that there was a conflict between the two extensions, but couldn't reproduce this behavior in a new profile. So after a lot of trial and error, I discovered that the root of the problem appears to have been a problem with the "organize status bar" extension. I reset my status bar icons to their default positions and Twitterfox began working fine even with Ubiquity installed. After customizing the icon positions again to restore my original icon order it still works. So somehow my icon order had been corrupted and was causing a problem.
I'm not reporting a problem per se, but rather just want to post my finding in case anyone else has this problem.

Improve PostRank algorithm for "aggregate" feeds? Is there anything that could be done to improve the PostRank results for "aggregator" feeds like this one?

AideRSS seems unable to accurately calculate an effective PostRank for this feed.
