Selectively restore bookmarksI noticed that when you're restoring bookmarks, you lose all the ones you've bookmarked since. :-( So what I would do about it, is to have a special interface where you could checkmark certain bookmarks/folders to restore without losing all the changes.
For example, I accidentally deleted an entire folder. I had bookmarked at least a few since, but it's still a major PITA.

Temporarily turning off syncing.I may have missed it, but it'd be great if there was a button you could press to temporarily turn off syncing. For example, when you're organizing bookmarks, sometimes it gets to be a pain because syncing slows down the browser to a crawl.
It'd be nice if the button was in an easy-to-reach location instead of hidden deep in the options. Also, it'd be nice if when you exit the browser the auto-sync turns back on (I'm forgetful, which is why I don't just use the "Enable automatic sync" checkbox)

Aimee Wilbury reported a problem in Xmarks on June 23, 2009 19:14:
Syncing suddenly failingI installed Ubuntu in a virtual machine and installed Xmarks in Firefox there. And suddenly, the Windows Firefox Xmarks is suddenly failing synchronization. In the log, I keep getting errors along the lines of this:
[2009-06-23 10:39:03] Synchronization failed. Error is (new Error("NearestAncestor failed accessing fwakxb6k-1", "chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-core.js", 801))
[2009-06-23 10:39:03] Returned error: Synchronization error(4)
[2009-06-23 10:39:03] Will retry at Tue Jun 23 2009 11:09:12 GMT-0300 (Atlantic Daylight Time)
It happens no matter if I have Firefox running in Ubuntu or not. (I keep Windows Firefox open now)

No no no.... it's not ripping off Google. I've seen it elsewhere.
For example, say this is your first bookmark set:
A
B
C
Then you delete B and add D. So when you compare the backup with the current set, it'll show up something like this.
A
B
C
D
(It doesn't show up too good on here. The B is strikeout'd and the D is bolded.)

Aimee Wilbury replied on May 17, 2009 18:15 to the question "My bookmarks disappeared! What's going on?" in Xmarks:
Recently, I had quite a few older bookmarks vanish. I brought them back using a Backup and merged them and got a lot of duplicates, which isn't such a good thing when you have a few thousand bookmarks. And BookmarkDD wants you to delete them one-by-one. Any suggestions (in case it happens again)?
Suggestion -- Is there a way that when you pull up a backup and merge them, that only the ones that weren't there before show up? Because between then and now, I had moved some folders around. And stuff.
Thanks.

If you have Firefox, you can use separate profiles. It's a bit tricky to find the Profile Manager, though -- here's how to do it.
Create a new shortcut for Firefox. Right click and go to Properties. Under Target. change it to
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager
Then click on that, will open Profile Manager. Make a new profile for your other family member. Then install the addon for that.
As for other browsers -- I don't know.

A better way to compare bookmark backups.I don't know if this is possible -- Google Documents does something like it, so probably is.
I think there should be a good way to compare 2 or 3 different bookmark sets from "Explore and Restore." A while ago I lost a whole bunch of bookmarks (I didn't delete the tags right) and Xmarks never said anything about it, like I read it should have.
My suggestion for integrating it -- In the Explore and Restore window, beside each bookmark set, add a little checkbox. People check the ones they want, and then at the top of the window there would be a button called "Compare. to Current Set." And maybe also another one to not bother with current sets. Also to reduce server load only allow to have about three or so.
My suggestion is to look at Google Documents -- for example, bookmarks that have gone missing should have a line through them, and new ones should be bolded.
I didn't see a way to do this -- so I might have missed it if it already exists.
Thanks.

Allow user plugins for different browsersPerhaps there is a way to let users write plugins to be able to sync with different browsers (e.g. Opera is one biggie. I don't use it myself, though.). I know Xmarks isn't open-source, but is there a way to do this?
Thanks.
EDIT: I did suggest this as part of the Standalone Xmarks Manager but that wasn't really noticed.
