akademy asked a question in Songbird on June 26, 2009 09:21:
Can we copy the music library to another computer?I need to transfer my songbird library to another computer, is this possible?
I've already tried copying my music library folder and the db folder inside the profiles folder, then replacing both on my other computer but this did not work, songbird didn't appear to read the new db files at all. This was attempted from windows to ubuntu, but I'll also need to transfer it to another windows.
This is primarily so I can keep the ratings of my music (as that's the only thing that's not held in the music file itself)
Ta.

akademy marked one of MishMich's replies in Songbird as useful. MishMich replied to the question "Scan for media using a samba connection not working".

That worked for me. :0)
I had to install the package "smbfs" to get it working first (I already had "smbclient" and "samba" packages") and I had to use the IP address. Once the mount was created Songbird scanned the folder correctly.
(My music is stored on a windows share on a network drive and songbird's running on Ubuntu 8.1) – akademy, on April 25, 2009 20:08-

Really? You'd like to make all linux users Dames? Personally I'd prefer to be a Lord but maybe the dresses wouldn't be to bad... – akademy, on April 09, 2009 07:55

Actually I was aware the profile was there. I did have a quick look for the list before I posted the question but didn't have the time to click through
I think, when I clicked on the "Account" link in the top I expected it to go to something like "My homepage" that would show everything I've done on your website. I saw the tabs on that page, but hadn't associated the "Profile "tab with comments, questions, etc.
Perhaps the account link should have that tab by default, I doubt users change their account settings very often anyway. Or maybe just a name change.
I think a "My homepage" might be really useful. Somewhere to quickly see the list of companies I'm interested in and any recent comments etc. Maybe a link in the same place as the login.
Overall, I haven't had problem with finding the companies, etc and entering new questions, praise, etc.

This has been partly fixed with the new functionality "Watch Folders", currently being tested in the nightly builds.
When new music is added (such as when iTunes updates a file to a new position) songbird will immediately pick it up in its own library. Nice!
One caveat though - It doesn't yet remove the original item from the list: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...

Can you see a list of topics you have commented on?I've made a few comments on some products and have had a reply on one of them. However, I can't remember the name of the topic.
Is there a way to see a list of all the topics I have commented on? Such as in my account area? Or secondly, is there a way to search across Get Satisfaction for a specific user?

It does do this. Or at least it used to, if you use Linux... It still works on WIndows though and probably Mac too. – akademy, on December 09, 2008 10:09

You can do it if you've got a copy of the 0.7.0 release... as follows:
- Install the 1.0 version as normal, start it up so it creates its bit and pieces then close it without any music in
- Now run the 0.7.0 version from whatever directory you've extracted it too.
- Now download the iTunes library importer. Do this outside of Songbird so you can easily get hold of the file.
- Extract the file into a directory (You may need to first rename it to *.zip)
- Open the file called "install.rdf" in a text editor and change this line to: "<em:maxversion>0.7.0</em:maxversion>" (It's about line 28)
- Now re-zip the folder content and rename it back to xpi
- Now you can import this into the 0.7.0 version of Songbird. But, you'll first have to tweak the iTunes library file.
- Make a copy of the iTunes libray file ("iTunes Music Library.xml") then open it in a text editor
- You'll have to change the file:// parts so that the paths are correct for Linux (Mine was to replace "F:" with "media/comp")
- Now use you new extension to import the new library file.
- Finally, close 0.7.0 and open 1.0

I downloaded the old 0.7 version of this extension but no luck I'm afraid. It looks like it's using old javascript calls that no longer work.
Are we going to be able to get a Linux version? (I know it doesn't work until the paths are tweaked but this can easily be implemented...). Don't force me to lose all my playlists and ratings please...-

akademy asked a question in Songbird on November 25, 2008 20:05:
Music organisation in Songbird... with iTunesAs (unfortunately) songbird doesn't automatically organise my music, i still use iTunes to make changes and to add new music.
However, there's currently a bug in the iTunes importer that doesn't recognise that a music file has changed position (details here) basically it can't play the music once a folder position change is triggered.
Vote for this is you do this too so we can get it pushed up the list. (Though obviously I'd prefer Songbird to do this.)
