Alexander Muse replied on December 22, 2009 03:43 to the problem "picture of lens cover doesn't open" in ShopSavvy (by Big in Japan Inc.):
Our latest release (1.1) seems to use a LOT more memory than 1.0. The scanning 'hints' added a LOT of overhead. Anyway, users who have not rebooted in a few days AND use a lot of apps have a problem where the app crashes. We have a fix submitted (1.1.1) that will resolve this (and hopefully not cause another issue).
At the end of the day, it took us almost 90 days to get our Android version stable. It has now been functioning well for more than 4 million users for a year. We hope that our new iPhone version will be stable in the next few weeks. Our 1.2 release should be SIGNIFICANTLY faster allowing for easier use (i.e. you won't have to hold your hand as steady). So stick with us, I promise you won't be disappointed.
ShopSavvy is the market leader in this space. We have more local and online retailers in our system than any of our competitors. Why? Because we have been working on this problem for more than a year. When we began in 2008 we had 200 retailers. Today we have more than 20,000 delivering pricing and inventory for more than 20,000,000 items.
Finally, we really appreciate your comment and hope to forge a long term relationship with you soon.

A comment on the problem "App 1.1 crashes on start up. Older version worked fine." in ShopSavvy (by Big in Japan Inc.):
I apologize, but 1.1 doesn't work with iPhones running older versions of the operating system (i.e. 3.0). You need to be running the latest version (i.e. 3.1 and higher). We have received a number of complaints from iPhone users who don't want to update (for various reasons). We have obtained a few test devices running older operating systems and will offer an update that supports older iPhone OS versions (including 3.0) in the next few days (i.e. as soon as Apple approves).
We recommend upgrading your iPhone to OS 3.1 it offers a number of really great features for your iPhone. Just plug your phone into iTunes and update. New features include:
Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
iTunes U content organization
Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
Option to "Save as new clip" when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
Paste phone numbers into the keypad
Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly
Remember, ShopSavvy is a free application - i.e. we aren't charging $1.99 - we are constantly improving our application (and the backend). Please give us a 5-star rating (each version needs a new rating). Also, follow our blog for more information http://biggu.com/blog and check out our FAQ at http://www.biggu.com/faq

Our next update will support 3.0. Don't bother upgrading to 3.1 because we ALSO have a memory leak issue there as well. 5-7 days and the problem should be fixed when Apple releases our update... UG>>> – Alexander Muse, on December 19, 2009 20:28

A comment on the problem "ShopSavvy 1.1 crashes on iPhone 3GS v 3.1.2" in ShopSavvy (by Big in Japan Inc.):
I understand completely. Are you running 3.1.1? If so and you are experiencing this you are running out of memory. Our next update should fix this for you. If you are running 3.0 it won't work. Our next update will support 3.0. Anyway, our Android install took about 90 days to perfect. Our Iphone version is in BETA and will likely be perfected in about the same time - i.e. 90 days. That is why we released it for free.... – Alexander Muse, on December 18, 2009 23:57

A comment on the problem "ShopSavvy 1.1 crashes on iPhone 3GS v 3.1.2" in ShopSavvy (by Big in Japan Inc.):
Got it. I really was thinking it was strange. We were seeing traffic from 3.1.1 phones so we thought it must be working fine. Also, we have a LOT of 3.1.1 phones here, none of which have had the same issue. The difference was a) we reboot them frequently and b) they don't have lots of apps on them. i.e. no memory issues. Again, thanks for your help. – Alexander Muse, on December 17, 2009 21:50
A comment on the problem "Please improve the barcode scanner, its really poor right now..." in ShopSavvy (by Big in Japan Inc.):
I get it, we need to be faster (we will get there). In the meantime, if you try the same scan under bright lights (like in Best Buy) it will scan much faster. The light level REALLY affects iPhone scanning. Users who try it in stores have a great experience - users who test it at home or in the office are often annoyed. This isn't the user's fault - it is just a fact about our current release. When 1.2 comes out we hope it will run like a no op - i.e. scanning immediately upon alignment - versus the hold it still approach we have now. Does this make sense? – Alexander Muse, on December 17, 2009 19:50

Of course, this is our first release on iPhone (the 1.1 was an instructional update). Take a look at RedLaser's first release a few months ago - they had similar learning curve (and they were charging for their app). We are in it for the long haul. The real power of ShopSavvy is our 20,000+ retailers. Our relationships with retailers gives ShopSavvy the broadest local and online coverage of any of the barcode apps. The main reason is that we are more than a year ahead of everyone else. Our scanning tech will be as good or better in weeks - I appreciate the feedback. We will continue to offer ShopSavvy for free.

Okay, we think we know what the problem is in 1.1. About 2% (maybe a little more) of 1.1 users are running out of memory when they ShopSavvy. Based on the research we have conducted (with help from several of you in this forum), the problem happens to iPhone users who meet two criteria: a) users who have lots of apps on their phone and b) users who have not rebooted in a while.
Most of the users who reboot are able to use ShopSavvy 1.1 without a problem. Rylan has a memory management fix in the works that should solve this in the 1.1.1 update. Thanks for sticking with us...

@octothorp - As I previously indicated in this thread, "we are seeing the crash reports on about 2% of the installs running 3.1. Working on them now to see what the problem is." I am not denying that you (and many others) are having issues. On the other hand 98% of users aren't having issues - I only know this because we can see their scan traffic. We assume if you are scanning it isn't crashing. I really appreciate the feedback - we rely on it! So thanks and be clear we aren't crash 'deniers'. – Alexander Muse, on December 17, 2009 19:06

The most common ShopSavvy issue on Android, is the 'force close' issue. We believe it to be an issue with the operating system. The best way to fix it is to uninstall ShopSavvy, reinstall ShopSavvy and then reboot. This seems to get rid of the 'force close' issue. For all other issues check out our FAQ or Support site.
