Hello. I just stumbled across http://tweetake.com -- it lets you download your followers list, your friends list, your last 1000 tweets (at least that's what it gave me when I tried it), and your favorites. No charge.
It uses the Twitter API, so you'll need to login with your Twitter username and password. If you're worried about security, I suggest you change your password to a throw-away password before using Tweetake, then change it back to your real password afterwards.
Also, since it uses the API, and we're only allowed 100 requests per hour on the API, I suggest you close any third-party apps that you may be using for an hour before trying to use this, so you don't run out of API calls.

We've started to offer download of your personal Twitter archives. This can include not only your messages but also replies. The service is not free but we think it'll be worth it for many people. It operates by using our own index of tweets that we've captured since Dec 2007. If the archive API is reliable we'll see how we can incorporate that. The url is https://www.tweetscan.com/data.php

They aren't DELETED, they're just more difficult to access. You can search (http://search.twitter.com/) for specific things and see that they do come up. I can find really old tweets by searching for "keyword, my username."
I AM irritated that I still can't just keep clicking the older button to access my archives though--I've been asking about this for something like two months now and still haven't really gotten an answer from Twitter. When is this going to be fixed?!

I'm sad too, I wish I had known, I would have done something to save them myself – sugigrl, on August 11, 2008 19:24

I realized what my problem was, I don't know if it's the same for you but the JPG file I had used to upload was in CMYK and not RGB. Open the image in Photoshop or some other image editing program and check to see under Image>Mode to see what the color settings are. I worked around it (before I realized the problem) by resaving the file as a png (which had converted it to RGB anyway). Hope this helps!

This has been discussed on other threads and no Twitter employees have responded as far as I've seen. INCREDIBLY frustrating that we can't even get some sort of reassurance that they will be back eventually or even acknowledgment that they are aware of the issue. – Jen, on July 18, 2008 16:41

I thought about this, too. Imagine a conference which has its own Twitter group. You join the group for the time the conference is held. You automatically follow everybody in this group and opt-in to let everybody else follow you. When the conference is over you un-follow the group and un-follow everybody else in this group except people you followed explicitly like your friends (who may have joined also this conference).
Twitter could even monetize this. Let's say you pay above a certain amount of people a group can contain.

There's some level of randomness to it - although I believe it's a little less so since we put our performance enhancements in. Let me see about getting that corrected.
Hesadanza, a suggestion only widget is a good idea. We're currently working on a v2 of the widget, that might be something we'll look into during or shortly after that's rolled out.
