Seems to be lots of complain in many places, including 37Signal's own forum and now here. I'm on Highrise and I agree, it's our data and they should get it back if they leave the service. But I've used Salesforce and it is a pain to export notes from there too. There's lots of good CRM around though. SugarCRM, Rave (by Entellium). Follow me on twitter for the latest apps I'm trying.

Yeah, its getting frustrating. The more and more I use the software the more and more I get hooked, but the more frustrated I am with it because it could be soooo much more.
The contact management/CRM space is rife with terrible software, but you're not going to win in the end by being completely inflexible.

Note that anyone can add a company, so you don't have to be the owner to add your business. Your personal Get Satisfaction account will be linked to your company's account when you claim as the admin.
Once you're an admin, you can add employees from your admin panel (provided they already have Get Satisfaction accounts), or they can go through the same process you did: sign up for a Get Satisfaction account and "claim" their employee status here on your company home page:

Click on "i'm an employee" and we'll make sure they are added.
Once you've done that, if you really want to build your community, you can announce it to your users, put a badge up on your site, or place a widget on your site. Those are also available from the admin area.

Hello there to all who've created and keep this great place running:) My question, I hope, will be a simple one (with an answer I must've just overlooked in process of signing up and into this program of company/customer relations) I would like to know if the process of getting one's company on board with GS and its many users would be best accomplished by having one individual (ulitmately, the owner of the business) sign up as the business, and then create a separate account as an individual who is an employee of the company, and then invite all other employees to join GS?
I'm just having problems sorting out just how best to go about the process to provide optimal visibility of my company to both my staff and current as well as future customers.
Again, this is a great site/board and we'll be glad to be a part of it, so I do very much look forward to any help in streamlining the signup process:)

As far as I've seen, if the task is shared (not sent to), everybody sees it exactly the same way. Any change or deletion is propagated for every shared user.
So, if someone completes a task, it disappears for you. If you actually need to see a task someone comepleted, ask them to tag it 'ok'. And use filter accordingly.

I'm checking out Pipeline deals as an option. It has the pipeline functionality that I want, AND it lets you export your data whenever you want. Sounds like a good match.
Is 37Signals going to allow data export or add CRM style pipeline tracking anytime soon? I saw a survey a few months ago within highrise asking for feedback, but I havnt heard anything since.-

Hear! Hear! Your three points are absolutely critical, Evbart.
This seems to be the general consensus. Personally for my company, it's a deal-breaker. I'm not going to invest the time/training/data entry in a system which I'm then held prisoner to, regardless of what the developers decide to do/not do in future. I was seriously looking at both Highrise and Backpack until 37Signals policy on this became clear to me.
Luckily Google Sites has now solved one of my problems, for a fraction of the cost of Backpack, and with no strings!

I agree, I'm on 37 Signals, and Im generally a pretty happy user, but I'm really questioning whether or not I should continue knowing that I can't get my data out.
There is a discussion similar to this on their forums, and they keep saying their servers are more secure than any place that we would store the data, but they're answering the wrong question.
People don't want a full export of their data just because they don't trust you to store the data, they want it so that they can leave, and if you have any confidence in your product, then you'll provide it just for peace of mind.
As I said in their forum, if you run a Software as a Service business, then by default just to keep up you have to provide:
- a user readable privacy policy, so I know what you'll do with my data
- an import, so I can get on to your service
- an export, so I can get back off of your service if you ever do anything I dont like. It helps keep the software company client focused!

It is never wise to even begin to use a product unless you can see how you can get out in case you grow out of it, or it fails to meet your needs over time. If a company doesn't build an exit strategy into its product it shows a lack of confidence that they can meet ongoing user needs or stay competitive with rivals.
So fool you if you're already a customer: 37signals won't introduce full export until they are confident their product is clearly superior. The fact that they add other bells and whistles while ignoring this feature suggests they do believe their product offers an inferior value proposition compared to alternatives.

Abandoning Highrise? Not at all! We're actively developing Highrise and all our commercial products.
For example, we introduced Bulk Tagging and import tagging just a few weeks ago. That was one of the top requests. Just a few weeks before that we introduced bulk delete.
We have more planned, but things take time to do right. Also, as a matter of policy, we don't comment on future plans as they relate to this feature or that feature.
So when we don't respond to a specific feature request in public it's not because we're ignoring it or not developing a product anymore, we just don't comment on feature requests one way or the other. But we do read everything and consider everything that is requested.
Allison asked a question in 37signals on May 11, 2008 09:48:
Is 37signals stopping development of Highrise? (aka Export All Data)37signals has been talking for over a year about offering full export of all data (currently only contact data is exportable). The company has not replied to customers about this on their forum for over a year now.
Is 37signals abandoning Highrise?
(And if so has anyone got a better CRM to recommend?)
Thanks

But, I should also add that there is a slightly wonky way you can accomplish this until we have our updated invite system in place. It occurs when you upgrade employee statuses in your admin section. If you enter an e-mail address of someone from your company who doesn't exist as a user in Get Satisfaction (e.g., bobby@yourdomain.com), you'll be prompted to invite them. Like this:

It's not as easy or seamless as it should be, but as I say, by next week it will be easier, and then easier still in the special admin version.
Thanks for your patience!

Allison, you are reading our minds. We are testing a new invite feature out today! We should have it up sometime next week, hopefully at the beginning of the week. This will allow you to invite people to join Get Satisfaction.
Right after we release that, we're going to make a special version of that tool for company admins to invite their fellow employees to join. So, we definitely hear you, and we're working on it.
