To restart GPS after setting a manual location, start from the home screen of Loopt, scroll to Settings (wrench icon) and select Settings in the popup menu. On the next screen select Location Updates, and then choose Automatic. Loopt should tell you its enabling updates and then you're good to go.
GPS will take a couple seconds to locate your phone (up to a minute); to know when you've been located, try by watching the small satellite icon in the upper right of the home screen. Green or Yellow means you've been found.
Settings > Help & About > Icon Guide describes what each of the satellites mean.

I'm sorry your running into problems with Loopt. To better understand the crash issues your seeing, could you please e-mail support@loopt.com with your phone's software version (can be accessed from Settings > Phone Info from your phone's main menu). Or if you'd like, send us a phone number to reach you and we can call and walk you through collecting it. We can also check that your privacy settings are set to share location and that no phones are blocked.
For the picture issue, you can set your profile picture by going to the home screen of loopt, choosing Settings > Edit Profile and then choosing Change Picture at the bottom.
If you just want to share a picture of what your doing, you can click the Share What's Up bubble on the home screen and Add Photo. Those pictures will appear in your journal.
