Amaryllis replied on October 25, 2009 17:47 to the idea "An Update on Ning Virtual Gifts" in Ning:
I think I mirror most views here when i say the virtual gifts is a good idea for some, but not all and the opt-in thing definitely should have been done. most of the people on my network log in and chat at night (which was when this feature showed up on my network). By the time I woke up in the morning, several people had sent me confused emails regarding this new feature and some spent some of their hard-earned dollars on worthless crap of a cartoon image called a gift. I know that's their fault not yours...but the gifts are too expensive and it's really messed up that most people only get 100 credits to start, so you only get to give one gift and one free one. There should at least be more free gifts...or i should be able to create FREE custom gifts. Also, how does the revenue thing work? I know it says 50/50. so i was interested and put in my email address and signed up using paypal. Whenever i go back to that link under the manage tab it just says "you will be notified shortly". I am starting to think that i'll never see a red cent!!! The notification has been there for at least three days!! No email from ning anywhere!!!! Get it together Ning please. I think your features are great sometimes but i do agree there were more important things to be fixed like CHAT!! So I am telling the people on my network that bought credits to stop buying and I will shortly thereafter CANCEL gifts app on my network. Its just a cheap ploy to for ning to get more money, even when creators like me are paying them every month for premium services. No love for us.

Wow that's messed up! I've had this happen to me too. One of my former members left the network and started another one, and sent an invitation to all his friendslist throughout ning. This included some of the membrs on my network, who did not want this kind of solicitation from a member who (in their eyes) had left the network on bad terms. So I get the COMPLAINTS, asking why they are getting messages from this former member to join another network, or to join various groups on that other network. It is kind of hard to explain to people why they are getting spammed like this.
There are people who go from network to network with the sole intention of joining, gaining as many friends as possible, and spamming them or advertising their business all over the place.
I think that Ning reps know this is a valid issue, but are taking a "I'm not touching that one!" approach to it.
I hope for a solution very soon on this. I think you should only be allowed to invite members to a network that you are still a part of. Once you leave a network, your friends on that network should be erased from your list. This is how it works on facebook, myspace, etc. Once you deactivate and delete your account, you sign up and start back clean.
Amaryllis asked a question in Ning on July 22, 2009 21:51:
How can I make it so that "Display my age" is the default when signing up??I have a social network where I have only about 300 members. Many of them are frustrated with trying to figure out the ages of the persons they are talking to. I noticed that when you sign up, the default is set not to display the age. I was wondering if there is a way to have "display my age and birthday" set as a default, then the member can change it if they want to. I know there is a way to display the age individually by going into the admin end of the network, but that is tedious and I cannot do it for 300 people, and it would also be done without their knowledge.
Any help?
Thanks!-

Is it me, or does it feel like you have to subscribe to and check the ning blog every second of your life to find out when sites will be offline. I am very observant and I check ning blog often (every day or every other day) but in the last month i've missed the message the last 4 or 5 times it seems...that they've said they're doing maintenance. Therefore I did not notify my members and I just hate the embarrassment of them looking at me like "WTF happened to the network? Why can't we CHAT?" (the members of my network love chat). Takes the livelyhood out of things. I am waiting for an update on the status on Ning Blog...the update that (according to them) should have been posted on the blog about 15 minutes ago...still waiting....-
