Andrew Luecke replied on November 29, 2009 01:31 to the question "Multimedia Keyboard with Songbird" in Songbird:
G'day,
In linux you may need the MMKeys addon.
In vista, if you are having problems, you are possibly using a keyboard that does stuff in a weird way (my Saitek keyboard works perfectly in Vista 32,64 and Windows7 32,64). Just wondering which keyboard you are using aiodownloaders? You may need additional software for your keyboard to be installed...
Andrew Luecke replied on November 28, 2009 04:59 to the question "Y not updating When I putt New music in my Music Folder!!???" in Songbird:
Yep,
Its known as Watch folders (you can set it up the first time you use Songbird, or from options).
Keep in mind, watch folders might not work everywhere. CD-Rom drives and SMB/network drives may not support it (because the protocols don't have a way to tell songbird something has changed, so it would be inefficient).
Also, keep in mind when going through options, MEDIA MANAGEMENT AND WATCH FOLDERS ARE NOT THE SAME THING!!!You probably don't want media management, so ensure you enable only watch folders.

Yeah.. Sound good.. Easiest way would just be to dump it onto a HTML5 video service though such as: http://openvideo.dailymotion.com/en
Andrew Luecke shared an idea in Songbird on November 27, 2009 06:59:
Introduce Video tutorials to First Aid section of WikiSongbird currently has a First Aid Page in Songbird Wiki to assist users with their problem. It has been invaluable in assisting users and helping them find solutions to their problems, as well as provide a knowledgebase for people supporting Songbird users.
Some things however are better explained with both video and text, such as the procedure to create a new profile to test with, or diagnosing iPod problems when iPod's are used in conjunction with Songbird (where tricky key combinations on the iPod's are required, which requires knowledge of how to time them to work).
So I propose that we add videos and more photos to the First Aid guide to help users further and allow them to diagnose problems easier

Andrew Luecke shared an idea in Songbird on November 26, 2009 15:46:
Allow easy purchasing of music (donate to artist) AFTER downloadCurrently, music to be purchased before they are downloaded by users, or must be given away for free (with no chance of profiting from it). This however only suits established artists well, because they get a lot of playback time over the radio which encourages people to buy music (because they know exactly what they are buying).
New artists however must offer free music for download so that people get a feel for their music before they have a chance of selling any albums. The problem is, the songs they give away can't easily be purchased later (even if users like them), so they may give away their one hit wonder!
I propose that Songbird introduces a way for artists to offer their songs for free download online, and allow users who like the music to easily purchase/donate to the artists after.
The easiest way of doing so, would be to create new ID3 tag's, including:
1) A link to the song, (for eg. 7digital.com/pay/Headlights)
2) A link to the artist (for eg 7digital.com/pay/Headlights/Telephones)
3) A digital signature to ensure nobody has changed the links.
Pioneers of the inevitable could then setup a whitelist to authorise only providers who are trusted (otherwise, pirates will distribute their own pay servers pretending to own the music). The ID3 tags could also permit MANY links, as artists may wish to use multiple pay servers (and allow end users to choose). If well designed, providers could also offer to upgrade files quality on payment (from MP3 to FLAC for instance, or 128kbps MP3 to 320kbps)...
I think this would change the way music is shared, provide better equality, make it easier for artists to avoid record labels who screw them, and finally, make it easier for young artists to succeed. We should be all about artists, not music labels :D
Andrew Luecke replied on November 26, 2009 05:50 to the question "Will MSC work in Linux/Mac OS in version 1.4?" in Songbird:
G'day,
The situation does suck, but at the end of the day, development resources are limited (and cost money), so I guess developers must prioritise the features that will satisfy the largest amount of users. There's no doubt that when the core base is developed that POTI will complete such features in Linux, but I guess they can't win every fight at the moment.
That being said, you could probably use Foldersync which works on Linux/OSX/Windows, and will probably work well enough for most MSC devices (if foldersync added automatic transcoding, that would certainly make it even better)..-

Andrew Luecke replied on November 26, 2009 04:28 to the question "How are Songbird and Qtrax related?" in Songbird:
G'day, it was possibly just missed.
But yeah, Songbird can certainly be cloned free of charge (people recompile it all the time). It also has means to let you easily rebrand it too. Some things are closed source though (such as the addons website, however, non-paying partners could probably easily develop their own).
Not really sure about the exact benefits paying partners receive, however, its probably stuff such as Mp3 encoding in 1.4 (as Mp3 encoding requires licensing, which is why it isn't included in the free copy, as it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars), support from the songbird team, and maybe stuff such as their own addons system (without having to develop their own). Not really sure though (never asked).
No idea if Qtrax paid or not to be a partner though, but its probably better to ask Qtrax (they might not want it public whether they are paid or not).
Btw, I'm community too, so this isn't an official response ;)
Andrew Luecke marked one of Jim's replies in Songbird as useful. Jim replied to the question "How are Songbird and Qtrax related?". Andrew Luecke and 6 other people think it's one of the best replies.

Andrew Luecke replied on November 26, 2009 03:51 to the problem "iPod sync broken, 'transcoder not available' but transcoder should not be needed" in Songbird:
@Zibalas. Technically, Rockbox supports MSC so should work with the upcoming MSC plugin in 1.4/Kanye/Korn or FolderSync even.
However, you'll note Rockbox only works on ancient iPod's, whose protocol's are stable anyway, and have been for years. The iPod's it does work on work with the iPod plugin. Technically, out of the iPod's supported, you also must realise that Rockbox might run poorly (on 3rd Gen it was painful).
Either way, might be worth trying. Interestingly, its worth noting that the iPod Video's were also the last iPod's before they started heavily locking them down (not sure if we will see rockbox on the later ones).
I think the problem here , is that free Songbird doesn't ship with MP3/AAC encoders (POTI have developed an MP3 encoder that paying partners can ship with their builds of Songbird, but don't ship it with Songbird apparently because licensing is damned expensive). This means if you are trying to transfer FLAC and such, it wont get automatically transcoded into an iPod compatible format, so it simply isn't copied (as it wont work). That being said, I'm sure someone might cook up an MP3 encoder using Lame which people can download (but POTI need to do it the legal way).
HOWEVER, Rockbox DOES support FLAC and more formats, so things should work better with it anyway. Anyway, give it a try, and if it doesn't work, we should perhaps post a bug report (because MTP/MSC is being actively developed and the problems may get fixed). It isn't a long term solution, but it will work better
A comment on the idea "DAAP/iTUNES-SHARING and RADIO PLAYLIST support" in Songbird:
Well, technically, something such as a locked down ftp server could even be used probably.. If there was a command put in place to support notifications to the client when the contents had changed, it would possibly work as well as DAAP. – Andrew Luecke, on November 25, 2009 02:43
Andrew Luecke replied on November 24, 2009 19:12 to the idea "DAAP/iTUNES-SHARING and RADIO PLAYLIST support" in Songbird:
I agree something is needed, but DAAP is a proprietary Apple protocol, whose current version hasn't even been reverse engineered yet even.
I agree something is needed, but we could never support DAAP well. POTI's best option would be to support a more open protocol. If Songbird claims to have iTunes compatible sharing, and Apple change the protocol (which, from experience working at an Apple Premium reseller, they have done so at least once), people will expect POTI to fix it on the spot (which could adversely affect development), and the protocol may not be easily reverse engineered anyway.
And Songbird certainly isn't aiming to emulate iTunes. iTunes is a pretty basic player overall (compared to others). And you'll find that there aren't too many ways of making a media player anyway.
Many features such as concerts, feathers and plugins already strongly differentiate it from iTunes I feel, and features which will be inherited from firefox eventually, will certainly widen the gap.
Just my opinion though...

Andrew Luecke replied on November 24, 2009 18:58 to the question "How to copy music to an USB device?" in Songbird:
G'day Jezik,
Support for MTP and MSC exists in the version which is about to be released (1.4).
In fact, POTI have taken it a step further and have added transcoding too, and even a way for hardware manufacturers to upgrade the firmware of MP3 players in Songbird (as iTunes can do with the iPod, but much more open).
A comment on the question "why wont songbird rip cds and title the tracks like itunes or windows media player?" in Songbird:
In which case, you could give 1.5pre-beta a try if you are feeling risky (wouldn't recommend it though still).

Andrew Luecke replied on November 24, 2009 02:34 to the question "Rating, coverart" in Songbird:
G'day,
I'll just add a few things:
1) The current means of storing ratings apparently isn't compatible with other players yet. For that reason, I haven't turned it on myself. Alfred could clarify better, but apparently they are working on implementing a standard common with other players slowly (something such as the POPM standard I'd imagine).
2) 1.2 has issues with metadata writing to ogg, m4a and wavs.... That's why its better to use 1.4. In fact, if you are using even older, you'd be crazy not to upgrade.

Andrew Luecke replied on November 23, 2009 16:36 to the problem "songbird isn't downloading" in Songbird:
If you are downloading it using firefox, try again using IE. The cache in one of your browsers may be corrupt, and using another browser will guarentee the cache is clear forcing a redownload.
@billchpln, what do you mean exactly? Are you saying you can't uninstall Songbird 1.3 or 1.4 betas? Because that can be fixed using info from: http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Getting_...
